Spantax

Spantax is a Spanish airline company which accomplished flight of 1959 to 1988. Its hub principal was with Palma de Majorque with the Balearic Islands.

Founded in 1959 under the name of Spain Air Taxi by Rodolfo Bay, a very famous pilot in Spain, the flight started on Douglas DC-3 ensuring the connection Palma de Majorque with an oil camp in the the Sahara. Since 1962, the company proposes flights charter of Majorques at several European big cities.

The fleet increased with other Douglas DC-4, DC-6 and DC-7, then DC-9 and DC-10 in order to carry out flights deck chair. In 1970, it is the second European company charter with more than 2 million passengers per annum. But the company loses 3 planes in 3 crash landing into 1970,1972 and 1973 (a collision in France).

The oil crisis of 1979 plunges Spantax in a financial crisis, worsened by the crash landing of a DC-10 with Malaga in September 1982. The financial problems worsening, the company is repurchased in 1987 by a Luxembourg financial group, which in spite of the social application of plan and the purchase of Boeing 767 did not manage to save the company which ceased any in March 1988 activity.
