The Partido Socialista Obrero Español or PSOE , in French Spanish working Socialist party , is a Political party of Spain. He is member of the European Socialist party and the Internationale Socialist.
Areas of the Andalusia, the Catalonia, the Galicia, the Castille it Sleeve, the Extremadure and the Aragon, like several big cities (whose Barcelona, Seville, Saragossa, Las Palmas of Gran Canaria, etc) is directed by members of the Socialist party.
It counts nearly 550.000 members, which makes of it the second political party of Spain in terms of members.
The program of the PSOE is close to that of the European Socialist party.
It was clandestinely founded with Madrid, the May 2nd 1879, around a core of intellectuals and workmen, basically typographers, carried out by the Galician Pablo Iglesias.
The first program of the new political party was approved by an assembly of forty people, the July 20th of the same year.
The PSOE was thus one of the first socialist parties which were born in Europe, like expression of the possessions and interests of the new working classes generated by the Industrial revolution.
Since, the party directed its work towards the result of the great ideals of emancipation of the Socialisme, with the logical changes of strategy which the historical eras imposed on each case, and which, freely and democratically, the associates decided together.
It was present in the Spanish public life since then, with a direct participation in the governments progressists of the Second Spanish Republic while being the object of persecutions lasting the dark period succeeding the Guerre of Spain. The PSOE had the responsibility for the government of Spain of 1982 with 1996, chaired by Felipe González, one period marked by deep reforms, among which the entry is detached from Spain in the European Union.
Since July 2000, its general secretary is Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (re-elected in 2004).
The May 25th 2003, the presidents of the Estrémadure, Andalusia, Aragon, the Asturies and Castille it Sleeve, members of the PSOE, all were re-elected. In November 2003, Pasqual Maragall is elected president of the Généralité of Catalonia. Following the elections of June 19th, 2005, it is with the turn of Emilio Pérez Touriño (PSOE) to reach the head of the Regional executive of Galicia.
At the time of the general elections of March 14th, 2004, Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero obtains the relative majority to the Congrès of the deputies: the PSOE makes its return to the government.
The PSOE is present in various countries, in order to maintain a proximity with the Spanish citizens residing abroad. In Europe, the local sections of the continent located out of Spain are federated by PSOE Europa.
