Spanish rhapsody

The Spanish Rapsodie of Maurice Ravel was made up in 1907. It is about the first major work for orchestra alone of the musician then thirty-two years old, ten years after the Ouverture of Shéhérazade .

Ravel was subject to a Hispanic influence from his/her mother, of Basque origin , which often sang melodies of its country to him. This inspiration is found in all has creative period of the musician ( Pavane for a late infante , the Spanish Hour , Boléro , etc). It is noted that its Spanish Rapsodie was written one year before Iberia of Claude Debussy.

A first version for two pianos made up during the summer 1907, was followed quickly transcription for orchestra. Work was dedicated with Charles Wilfrid de Bériot, professor of Piano of the type-setter and wire of Charles-Auguste de Bériot, violonist Belgian. Creation took place on March 5th 1908 with the Théâtre of Châtelet by the orchestra of the Concerts Column under the direction of Edouard Colonne, with a very mitigated success. Work was however appreciated by Manuel of Falla.

It comprises four parts and its execution lasts approximately fifteen minutes. The second part is a dance, near of the Fandango, resulting from the Folklore of Malaga. The Habanera is an orchestral resumption of a part for two Piano S made up in 1895 and which belonged to the auricular Sites .

  • Prelude to the night : very moderate

  • Malagueña : enough sharp
  • Habanera : enough slow and a tired rate/rhythm
  • Feria : enough animated.
