Spanish Harlem (also known under the name of El Barrio ) is a district of the island of Manhattan to New York, close to Upper East Side, Harlem, Central Park and East River. The district extends from the 96e to the 125e street, in the east of Harlem, from where its other name, East Harlem .

The district was initially snuffed by the immigrants Italy NS (one spoke then about Italian Harlem ), then starting from the Années 1930, by the Porto Rican . At that time, the emblematic figure was Fiorello LaGuardia, a reformer who was elected mayor of New York after having fought corruption and having fought against the quotas of immigration.

Today, one counts approximately: 120000 Porto Ricans in what is largest Barrio (" district" in Spanish) of the east coast of the the United States. They reside for the majority in the 200 blocks of HLM built by the town of New York in the years 1930-1940 around the 3rd Avenue. They are called sometimes the Nuyorican , by contraction of “New York” and “Puerto Rican”.

Culture

Many writers and artists live or lived in Spanish Harlem, of which James Of Vega, known to have decorated the walls, the pavements and the streets of the district, the musician Tito Puente (the 110e street was renamed “Tito Puente Way”), the legend of the Jazz, Ray Barretto and one of the greatest poètesses of Puerto Rico, Julia of Burgos among others. It is also in Spanish Harlem that was born the Salsa.
