The term spanglish comes from the English spanish + english . It indicates a linguistic mixture between English and the Spanish . This term also says ingleñol , more often with Puerto Rico.

In the beginning it indicated a phenomenon of Diglossie, Calque and Code-switching marking the Acculturation and the progressive integration of the immigrants Hispanophone S of Latin America with the the United States. ( vacumar the carpeta , el rufo me liquea )

Aspects of the phenomenon

Spanglish in the United States

The spanglish is before-all a change of code in the same sentence in a Spanish-speaking speaker. The sentence alternates Spanish English passages then: “ I' m sorry I boat awaits next week' S meeting porque tengo una obligación of negocios in Boston, pero espero that I' L Be back for the meeting the week after . ” It is thus a phenomenon specific to the Bilingue S.

That also appears in the syntactic plan with verbal Anglicisms: “ Shine quoteó el email of Francisco in el foro . ”

Certain words spanglish of popular origin are anchored besides in many expressions of immigrants of origin latinoaméricaine, they mix the structures of the English word by hispanisant it. What gives for example for the adjective " Watchman" (vigilant, which is said normally vigilant in Spanish) " Guachiman" , which gives place to modification even more complex like " Guacha! " who wants to say " Watch out" (Pay attention! look at!) and which can even become " guacha te". Other words are quite simply copied on English but add a termination (and the accent of course) Spanish. " example; To park has because " becomes " Parquear el caro " .

Birth of a new language?

Ilán Stavans, professor of cultures and Latin-American languages at the University of Amherst (Massachusetts), studied this linguistic phenomenon, which it compares with the Yiddish. It published in 2003 a work on the subject, Spanglish: The Making off has New American Language , where it translates even in this language the first chapter of the Don Quichotte.

The Spanglish is a mixture of English and of Spanish, more precisely, it consists in using English and Spanish typical structures, with a primarily English vocabulary but comprising some Spanish terms. It allows Spanish knowing only little English and Spanish-speaking English to communicate without big problems of languages. It is however especially used by inhabitants of the U.S.A. or Spanish-Americans.

The film " Spanglish" , by James L. Brooks, this new language treats rather well, while insisting however on the shock of the cultures which is born from this mixture. (cf Spanglish (film))

Technology and Anglicisation

This phenomenon of intrusion of the language English E touches from now on the language Spanish E with the new technical things whose Internet which as in Franglais incorporates many Anglicisme S: browser , frame , cookie , cat , email ,… without clear translation ( cookie ), or simply by facility: chatroom is shorter than salted charla .

The business world is also subjected to these influences: marketing , Catering , brainstorming

In South America, Spanish and the Portuguese mix in Portugnol or portunhol or portuñol while with Peru Japanese of the migrants of the second generation mixes with the local language to give the Japoñol.

In Spain, with the Basque Country, the combination of Spanish and will euskara gives the Euskagnol ,
