Spaceship

This article presents imaginary vehicles, for the real vehicles, to see Space vehicle.

In science fiction, a spaceship is generally a machine which moves in the Espace-temps, in the space Vide . But the function of displacement is not necessarily the single interest in the universe of science fiction. A spaceship can often become a " door - closed " where will be held an human tragedy under extreme conditions, as in " the eighth passenger " and of many episodes of Star Trek.
Aspects
Contrary to the real vessels which must hold account many forced, the spaceship can be freed from the laws of the Aérodynamisme (and paradoxically to preserve of it certain aspects for environments and Spectacles, like noises of engines or piqués of hunters).
The shape of a vessel is sometimes selected according to its military armament; for example, the large laser guns are often located on the back of the apparatus, dimensioned according to their firepowers maximum and dissimulated by a trap door. The very fast weapons with repetition are sometimes placed below the vessel, following the example military helicopters.
By preoccupation with a realism, the armament, the supplied energy, the shielding (shield) of the vessels are often proportional to their size. Thus a hunter will be lighter than a station of combat, which will cause to emphasize more still heroism of the pilots on their board. The creator of a machine also chooses the form of his creation according to the history which he wants to tell. In Riddick for example, the vessel is armed on all the sides and can accommodate a band of hunters of premium, the choice thus went on a vessel of middle-class in the company with some technical defects including in the shape of the apparatus.
The Forme of the spaceships takes as a starting point various sources: military world (Fighter plan, Warship, Underwater), Automobile design , planet gear ( Star wars : the black star), of monuments such as the pyramids of Gizeh (Stargate SG-1) or of natural forms (vessel of animal or vegetable nature).
At the time of the choice of the shape of the spaceship, the creator is vis-a-vis contradictory problems:
In general, the vessel is adapted to the characters, the missions, the lifestyles on board and obviously in the various mediums, even grounds, but moreover, it must have forms:
- esthetic;
- of aspect warlike, maternal, mild nutter, sinks… according to the needs;
- credible and in conformity with the laws of the world to which it corresponds
- scientific/parascientific
- technological
- economic
- social and cultural
- biological
- and finally in conformity so that the public knows already or can recognize easily. Sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice to the practices of the fans (thus the digitized vessels of Star Trek were modified to keep a less realistic aspect and more model of plastic).
At the end of the day, it is rare to adopt realistic forms and colors for such machines. One can moreover object that the real constraints of the space flights, the space combat or future technologies are not yet known. The credible shape of a spaceship is thus prone to all the speculations, and to take as a starting point the vessels (in activity or project) current can be included/understood only if the action proceeds in our world and a future too distant step.
Propulsion
The means of propulsion are extremely varied:
- propulsion known as " standard " , i.e. with a technology which allows a displacement at a speed lower than that of the light (often known as subluminic or conventional )
- propulsion known as " supraluminic '' or hyperspatiale" , that is to say at a speed exceeding that of the light
- propulsion " instantaneous " : the vessel " saute" from one point to another of space instantaneously
- propulsion mild nutter, such as for example that imagined by Douglas Adams: propulsion with the bad news.
Categories
One finds various categories of spaceships, each one having a quite precise function.
Men-of-war
Many films, novels and video games, have as a subject a space war. And, among all these models of fleets, appears a recurring prototype adapted of the naval forces and air existing since the beginning of the second world war (ex: Star Wars , Homeworld , Starship Troopers , Freelancer or Stargate ).
Light vessels
- the hunter , the such X-wing in Star Wars or the Sailplane of dead the in Stargate, is often small, ultra-handy and has a deterrent force certainly considerable but weaker than on other types of vessels. Enough fragile it is made cut down quickly.
- the bomber , more heavily is armed and defended better than the hunters. It aims at the average vessels (ex: Homeworld , Alkesh in stargate).
Average vessels
- the frigate is slightly armoured and sometimes armed rather well, it is particularly manoeuvrable and has a few light units in parking. It is used mainly for the destruction of the enemy hunters.
- the corvette is a vessel heavily armor-plated, slow and not very handy, but very powerful and able to compete with vessels of higher class.
Heavy vessels
- the Destroyer is a powerful vessel of defense against the average and heavy vessels.
- the Croiseur is a powerful vessel of attack heavily armoured and armed.
- the Cuirassé is a vessel very heavily armor-plated and having an enormous firepower, primarily against the heavy units.
- the Carry-vessels is a vessel of transport and of restocking of light vessel ( hunter , bomber )
- the vessel-mother is the vessel most heavily armed and protected. Often single, it is the jewel of the fleet it with the capacity to be able to build all the other categories of vessel.
Others
- the station , which takes as a starting point the current space stations, is proposed by Starship Troopers . It gives a support for the vessel of combat as well material as logistic) and allows the repair of the damaged vessels.
- the station of combat , introduced by Star Wars, has a defense and a sufficient attack to hold head with a armada. It will be noted that in the universe of Star Wars, the Star of Dead is destroyed only thanks to one error of design for the first, and owing to the fact that it is incomplete for the second. Nothing can determine the exit of the battle if the Black Star had been finished.
- the Mecha , that one generally finds in the Manga S of Science-fiction.
Commercial vessels
- the conveyer . As its name indicates it is specialized in transport, whether they are resources or troops. Often enormous, rather slow and really very vulnerable, it offers a perfect target for the plunderers of space. For that it must be equipped with heavy protections (ionic shields…) and never leaves without being accompanied at least by some hunters.
- the vessel long-distance . Very indicated for the voyages very, very long, the vessel long distance often accommodates in its center a crew in cryogenic hibernation (as in Alien for example). The vessel must then be able only to be controlled and have enough energy to maintain its crew in life, which explains its relative slowness.
- vessel-cruising . The such boats of cruising of our time, vessel-cruising are true flying de luxe hotels. They offer luxury, calm and pleasure with their passengers, often the richest individuals of the galaxy. One of the best examples of vessel-cruising appears in the Fifth Element .
Various vessels
- the UFO is the vessel of the Extra-terrestre S in films of Science-fiction. Often in the shape of flying saucer, they have rather impressive technological capacities which enable them to reach vertiginous speeds. The stereotype of the UFO appears in Rencontres of the third type with the very many lights which escape from it.
- One also meets in certain humorous novels of the vessels of unexpected form: disguised out of air-conditioner in You would not have seen my planet Bob Otum, for example.
