One understands by space vehicle or spacecraft or spationef , a vehicle allowing to move in the space or to reach it from the surface of a body céleste.
A space vehicle can be inhabited or uninhabited , following if it is or not equipped with systems allowing the survival of living beings (human or not) on its board. The space vehicles are designed for a variety of missions which can include communications, the observation of the ground, meteorology, navigation, planetary exploration, space tourism, or missions in military matter (espionage, defense or attack).
The term space vehicle is also used to indicate the artificial satellites.

In the Science fiction, the space vehicles are often called spaceships.

The existing space vehicles are:

  • satellite ;
  • fused space S;
  • the space probes;
  • the space capsules;
  • the space shuttles;
  • the space stations.

Overall picture

A system of space vehicle comprises various subsets, dependant on the profile of the mission. The subsets of the space vehicles can include: the ordering and the determination of attitude (differently called s.t.o.l, HALF-VALUE LAYER or ACS), guidance, navigation, and order (GNC or GN&C), communications (COMS), processing of order and data (CDH or C&DH), power (EPS), thermal order (CTCs), Propulsion, structures, and Payload. The space vehicles can be equipped to provide for the needs for a crew.

Order attitude

A space vehicle requires a subset of ordering of attitude so that it can be correctly directed in space and answer torsions and the external forces correctly. The subset of ordering of attitude is composed of Sonde S and Déclencheur S, as well as algorithms of control. The subset of ordering of attitude allows the suitable pointing in the interest of the Science, towards the rays of the Sun: for the energy, and towards the Ground: for the communications.

G.N.C.

(or Guidance - Navigation - Order)

The G uidage refers to calculations orders (usually made by the subset " CDH") necessary to the orientation the space vehicle to be with the desired site. The NR avigation resides in the determination of the orbital elements of the space vehicle or its position. The C ontrôle means to adjust the way of the spaceship so that are combined the conditions of the mission. On some missions, the orders of GNC and attitude are combined in a subset of the spaceship.

C.D.H.

(or Command and Dated Handling: processing of order and data)

The subset of CDH receives orders of the subset of Communication S, carries out the validation and the decoding of the orders, and distributes the orders to the subsets and the suitable components of the space vehicle. The CDH also receives data of household and scientific data of other subsets and components of the space vehicle, and assembles the data for storage on a recorder with Semi-conducteur S or for the transmission towards the ground via the subset of communications. The other function of the CDH includes to maintain a monitoring on the Horloge and the good state of the space vehicle.

Energy

The space vehicle requires a subset of production and distribution of the electric current making it possible to feed the various subsets of the space vehicle. For the space vehicle close to the Sun, solar panels are frequently employed for a power supply. The spaceship designed to function in more distant places, like Jupiter, could use a generator Thermoélectrique of radioisotope (RTG) in order to produce electricity. The electrical energy is sent in a control unit before being redistributed, thanks to unit of redistribution, by a wire data bus towards the other components of the space vehicle. Batteries are normally connected to the bus via a regulator of load of battery, and are used to provide the Electric current for periods when the primary power is not available, for example for a space vehicle with low orbit (LEO - Low Earth Orbit) is eclipsed by the Earth.

Thermal regulation

The space vehicle must be built to be able to resist the passage in the atmosphere and the space environment. It must function vacuum with temperatures extending on a broad range (hundreds, positive and negative). According to the profile of mission, the spaceship can also operate on the surface of another planetary body. The thermal subset of order can be passive, depend on the choice of materials with specific radiant properties. The thermal order activates makes use of electric heaters and some Déclencheur S such as hoods to order room temperatures specific to the limits of the equipment.

Propulsion

The space vehicle can or not have a subset of propulsion, according to whether the profile of the mission requires, or not, a need for Propulsion. The space vehicle Swift is an example of spaceship which does not have a subset of propulsion. In general, the space vehicles LEO (for example Terra: EOS AM-1 , includes a subset of propulsion for adjustments of altitude (called: drag make-up maneuvers , that is to say “Operation of constitution of resistance”) and the operations of adjustment of slope. A system of propulsion is necessary also for the space vehicle which carries out operations of management to the dash. The components of a conventional subset of propulsion include the fuel, the tankage, the valves, the conduits, and the ejectors. The TCS (Control thermal: to see above) is connected by interface to the subset of propulsion by supervising the temperature of these components, and by pre-heating of the tank S and the ejector S for an operation of the space vehicle.

Structure

The spaceship must be built to resist loads of launching given by the vehicle of launching, and must have a point of attachment for all other subsets. According to the profile of mission, the structural subset could have to resist loads given by the entry in the atmosphere of another planetary body, and the unloading on the surface of another planetary body.

Payload

The payload depends on the mission of the space vehicle, and is typically regarded as part of the space vehicle “which pays the invoices”. The typical payloads could include the scientific instruments (cameras, telescopes, or detectors of particles, for example), cargo, or human being used as crew.

System on the ground

The system on the ground, which does not form really part of the vehicle, is essential with the operation of the space vehicle. The usual components of a system on the ground during operations include/understand: an operational team which allow the direction of the operations of the space vehicle, a storage and a data processing, ground stations which allow the transmission and the reception of signals of the space vehicle, and finally, a communication network voices and given to give an account of the elements of the mission.

Launching

The launcher is used to propel the spaceship of the surface of the ground, through the atmosphere, until an orbit. Orbit depending on the configuration of the mission. The vehicle of launching can be reusable or not.

Reusable vehicles

The first reusable space vehicle, the X-15, was launched in the air on a suborbital trajectory on July 19th, 1963. The first partially reusable orbital spaceship, the space shuttle, was launched by the United States at the time of the 20th birthday of the flight of Youri Gagarine, on April 12th, 1981. During the era of the shuttles, six American space shuttles were built, which flew in the atmosphere, of which five flew in space. The Entreprise shuttle was employed only for tests of approach and of landing, impetus of the back of a Boeing 747 and landing in Edwards Air Force Bases in California. The first Space shuttle to be flown in space was Columbia, followed by Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavor. Endeavor was built in order to replace Challenger when it was lost in January 1986. Columbia exploded at the time of its entry in the atmosphere in 2003.

The first (and up to now only) spaceship partially reusable automatic (although also conceived to be inhabited and/or controlled by a crew) was the Soviet space shuttle Buran (" storm of neige"), launched by the USSR the November 15th 1988, although it carried out one vol. Its resemblance to the American space shuttle (due only to aerodynamic requirements), was only apparent, since its strap-on boosters used liquid propellents, and that the shuttle itself was only the payload of the Energia rocket (the principal engines were placed at the base of what would be the external reservoir of the American shuttle). The lack of financing, worsened by the dissolution of the USSR, prevented any other flight of Buran.

For Vision for space exploration , the space shuttle must be withdrawn about 2010 mainly because of its maintenance costs become high and a program reaching more than one billion dollar by vol. the shuttle of transport human must be replaced partially by that reusable: Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV - Vehicle of exploration for crew) not later that in 2014. The role of transport of important cargo of the shuttle must be replaced by expansible rocket S such as Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV - Vehicle of advanced launching expansible) or a vehicle of launching derived by shuttle.

The Composite Scaled and its SpaceShipOne were a reusable suborbital space plane whose pilots Mike Melvill and Brian Binnie had embarked on consecutive flights in 2004 at the time of the victory of the price " Ansari X". " Spaceship Company" its SpaceShipTwo successor will build. A fleet of SpaceShipTwo for Virgin Galactic should start the paying reusable private space flights with passengers in 2008.

Fiction

The term of space vehicle is mainly used to evoke the real space vehicles or which are designed by using current technology. The “spaceship” and the “starship” are generally used for a fictitious spaceship, usually those able to transport people. The spaceship is one of the principal elements in the science fiction. Many short stories and novels accumulated various ideas around the spaceship, and the spaceship was often used in films. Certain books of science pure fiction, concentrate on the technical details of the vessel, whereas others treat spaceship as being, a little, the future space vehicles.

Famous spaceships

  • US Enterprise and Klingon Bird off Prey of Star Trek

  • Millennium Falcon , Death Star , X-Wing and Tie fighter of Star Wars
  • TARDIS of various British series of sciences fiction.
  • Discovery One of the film 2001, the odyssey of space
  • the Battlestar Galactica of the homonymous telefilm.
  • Daedalus class battlecruiser of Stargate Atlantis

UFO

Some believe that the unidentified flying objects (OVNI) can be foreign spaceships (i.e., not to come from the ground), sometimes indicated under the name of the flying saucers. But the term of UFO used in this context refers to the flying objects observed for which no identification was made, however other significances for the word UFO exist. Up to now, no known and verifiable example of the existence of UFO was proven.
