Space distortion

Principle

A space distortion is a modification of the continuum Espace time in a given area of space.

It is necessary to think space time like a " toile" tended to the top of the ground. A mass (or an energy, since there is duality according to Einstein: E=mc2) is as a ball which one would pose on the fabric. Under its weight, the fabric would form a basin. If another ball were placed sufficiently close to the first, it would roll in its direction, it is the gravitational Attraction.

The gravitational distortion is symbolized here by the distortion of the fabric. As this distortion is too important, the fabric is " percée" , there is formation of a Black hole.

To have a distortion, it is necessary to have either an important energy source, or of an important mass (or two compounds). To note that it is this space distortion which makes it possible the satellites (artificial and natural) to turn around their planets.

In practice

When there is space distortion, in the zone or the distortion is made feel, time passes more slowly. That is due to the effect of relativity (see General relativity). Thus, the ground being in a space distortion (that of planet and its star), time passes more slowly than out of this zone.

The distortion generated by the Earth is felt even with " petites" scales, thus, the atomic clocks orbits about it around the Earth of the systems of positioning per satellite (GPS, Galileo) require a correction for the deceleration due to the effect of terrestrial gravity.

The effects of a gravitational distortion are made feel, in theory, ad infinitum. However, starting from a certain distance, they are negligible compared to the other concerned forces.

The natural gravitational distortions are used in astronomy like " loupe" natural. Indeed, the galaxies are sufficiently massive to modify the course of the photons emitted by other galaxies, which, are seen then is larger than they are not, that is to say in several specimens.

The space distortion in the science fiction

It is very present in the science fiction where it is mainly used in 2 forms:

  • to create a Hole of worm (also called bridge of Eistein-Rosen) allowing to move of a point to another of space in an quasi-instantaneous way.
  • to create a gravitational distortion around an object, generally a vessel, to make it drive in space with a supraluminic Speed.
