This work, published in 1975, indeed tells the history of a theater company which must play a part of William Shakespeare in front of the public ones varied while traversing giant planet. The author thus exchanges the opera for the theater, passes from the Space operated with the Planet operated, but preserves the narrative diagram and the comic vein of the original.

The Phébus lands soon on Batifol, the planet-prison. The crew is received by the Principal Inspector of the planet which explains the theory in force to them on planet: a facies of criminal induces a behavior of criminal. This theory led to the creation of the Laboratoires of Repair , a center of plastic surgeon installed on planet to give again with the prisoners a more pleasing access and to influence their behaviors. Ram Grayce then made play Turandot of Giacomo Puccini, then the Knight with the pink of Richard Strauss and finally Cosi fan tutte of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Success is enormous. But the planet is only ruins and desolation, only some whistles in the forest attest of an intelligent presence. Despaired, Madoc Roswyn, which believed to find the civilization of its ancestors, leaves the vessel surreptitiously and is inserted in the forest. Listening to only his courage and his love for it, Roger Wool leaves to his research, but returns soon, wounded by a stone jet. In order to show with the autochtones that it is not hostile for them, the troop decides to play Pelléas and Mélisande of Claude Debussy. During the representation, Madoc Roswyn leaves exhausted forest and joined the vessel. She learns to the members from the crew that the inhabitants of planet listen to the music since the skirt of forest and wait to attack them. Dame Grayce then requires of the technicians to arrange their material discreetly while the orchestra continues to play. The musicians one by one leave their desk and the Phébus finishes by redécoller under stone jets.

Term of the voyage: the Rlaru planet. As soon as the Phébus enters its atmosphere, the Gondar captain disappears suddenly. Dam Grayce decides to represent Hänsel and Gretel of Engelbert Humperdinck in front of some vagrants of Rlaru. The following day, the troop plays the Tales of Hoffmann of Jacques Offenbach in front of many people gathering all the social classes of planet. Follow the Magic Flute of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the Ghost ship of Richard Wagner, but the public rarefies. The next day, the Parsifal of Richard Wagner gathers only some aristocrats and a score the poor ones. Social satire of the musical world

Jack Vance takes a malicious pleasure to make of its novel the satire of the traditional musical medium and society man. The musical critics put forth vague and bombastic judgments, the singers of opera make their whims, while their rich person patrons consider their action like a cultural mission of very first importance.

The world of the classical music is largely presented like condescending towards the other forms of musical expression, like the Jazz, and towards the fringe of the population which is not receptive there. The characters of the novel consider that the music of opera is the musical top of the human culture: not there not to be sensitive is only the sign of a cruel lack of culture and open-minded. Jack Vance is ironical thus about some bourgesoie or silver plated aristocracy which uses the classical music - and operated it in particular - as criterion of social distinction.

The satire culminates in the description of a character high society man colors, Dame Isabel Grayce, an authoritative lady-patroness and idealist who believes in his mission: to spread the universal language which is the music in all the universe. Its stubbornness to be believed in the universality of the music, in spite of the denials of the ethno-musicologist Bernard Bickel and the disastrous experiments made on various planets, in fact a character at the same time singular and attaching.

Roger Wool, the nephew of Lady Isabel Grayce, is on his side presented by the author like a Dandy inapt for the work and very anxious of becoming of his heritage. Ironically, this character who lives with the hooks of his richissime aunt is the first to treat the musicians and the artists of “parasites” of the company.

Problem of the universality of the musical language

It is the character of Bernard Bickel, the ethnomusicologist of the novel, which deals with the theoretical dimension of the musical problems that Jack Vance draft at the beginning of the account. Is the music a language universal, as Dame Grayce believes it? The ethnomusicologist answers then in several points. The music is universal from the objective point of view as a whole of sizes and mathematical relationship between sounds which are physical vibrations. It is also universal from the subjective point of view as for the effect which certain sounds produce on the sensitive beings: feeling of appeasing with slow and soft sounds, feeling of excitation with acute and claironnés sounds. But its language, i.e. its melody organization , rhythmic and harmonic, is the fruit of a cultural convention. If this conventional dimension does not exclude to meet extraterrestrial races which uses like human the diatonic scale, the discovery in the universe of a musical language are equivalent to that of Land is presented like very improbable.

It is precisely this challenge which the character wishes to take up of Lady Isabel Grayce with his troop of opera in departure for stars: to meet beings which would share the same noble and sophisticated design music.
