Space Go

SPACE GO is a theater located on the street the St. Lawrence at Montreal and its managing director and artistic is Ginette Noiseux.

SPACE GO

SPACE GO animates a place, combines a double vocation of producer and diffuser and plays the public part of builder curious one about the contemporary authors and innovative practices. The programming is largely made up of new productions, which meet the public for the first time. In its theater, the artists propose with public current writings from here and from abroad, of the strange or unaccustomed universes, works of the traditional dramaturgy or that of Old with their current questionings revisit. SPACE GO supports the discovery of the dramaturgy of French language.

The artistic director of SPACE GO is seen entrusting the responsibility to initiate the creation of at least three new theatrical productions while taking care to create a dynamics interesting in its season for the spectator, between the spectacles house and those proposed by the other companies which occur in its place.

The PàP Theater directed by Pitching Claude is in residence in its place, ensuring each season the vivifying and essential presence new texts of Québécois authors.

In a world where the borders grow blurred, where art derives towards new interbreedings, the programming is opened with the various disciplines of the performing arts: performance, contemporary dance, modern opera, current musics, concerts electroacoustics. The theater grows rich by this constant emulation.

The artistic director of SPACE GO encourages the continuity of the partnerships. The spectators are invited to not only witness a new production, but, beyond, to be interested in the “step” which an artist or a company continues, on cycles of creation. SPACE GO is concerned of the spectator who crosses the threshold of his theater. It developed many tools for dialog with the public on the nature of creations with the poster, the courses of the authors, the artists and the companies. All is implemented to ensure the quality of the meeting with the audiences and to facilitate greatest accessibility with its theater.

Let us recall that SPACE GO accommodates creations from abroad regularly. The choice of these spectacles is inhabited by the desire to present to public the work of artists of other cultural horizons which share its concerns and come to hustle a priori.

HISTORY

The history of a company of theater, it is like the stories of family. One lives together in residences, a time, then one disperses. There are the couples which are made and demolished, of the photographs in the trunks, the friends of yesterday that one lost sight of the fact and the young people who have glance only for what there is in front. Completely as in the life of people.

One could not read the history of SPACE GO without also reading the important transformations of mentalities in his company. SPACE GO is anchored in the moment of the “present”.

Yesterday, like today.

The 1979-1984 Experimental Theater of the Women SPACE GO is resulting from the Experimental Theater of the Women, founded in 1979 by pol. Furrier, Louise Laprade and Nicole Lecavalier. Its history passes by that of the places which it animated: room of the Beaujeu House in Old man-Montreal (1979-1983), with the small manufacture of the street Clark (1985-1994), with the opening of its new place in 1995: a studio-theater with variable configuration on the St. Lawrence boulevard.

The first years are remembered by collective creations, the emergence of a dramaturgy of women, the festivals of creations of women. The projects all are managed in self-management. The core founder starts to be dismembered with the end of the year 1981. Towards the same period, Ginette Noiseux and Lise Vaillancourt are successively invited to join the basic cell. The lease of the street Beaujeu is not renewed for the season of 1983.

1985-1986 manufacture In 1985, after two years of nomadism and thanks to the initiative of Sleeve-board Laquerre (the first administrator of the TEF), the company settles in a small manufacture of the street Clark in Montreal. This place will be called SPACE GO. The company combines a double action of producer and diffuser.

The “girls of the TEF”, as they are called, are now alone with the bar of the artistic director. They continue a research which supports the interbreeding of all the forms of art, the contamination of the ideas, in addition to insufflating there a preoccupation with a requirement raised in the choice of works. SPACE GO positions like a young theater of dynamic and promising avant-garde.

1987 the Beautiful Show The beginnings of the young SPACE GO will have been very difficult. The cases are empty. Helene Pedneault calls with the rescue her friends of the world of the song. All the money re-entries of the Beautiful Show presented to Spectrum in May 1987 will save the TEF of the imminent bankruptcy. As from this moment and on several occasions, the artists, the public and the patrons (in particular, in the first chapter, Deckchair A.T Inc.) will take part in many events to ensure the health and the financial safety of the company.

Ginette Noiseux henceforth assumes only the artistic director of the company. The Festival of Theater of Americas (now TransAmériques Festival) and its founder Marie-Helene Falcon will have a determining influence on the opening of her theater in the “World”.

The 1988-1989 first man In 1988, the company invites for the first time a man, Claude Pitching, to sign the setting in scene of the Deposition of Helene Pedneault. Since, male comrades take part in its creations and sit at its board of directors where the women remain, still today, majority. The artistic director made of this “difference” an engine in enthralling exchanges, as much ideological than artistic. During 20 last years, the Alice Ronfard, Louise Laprade, Brigitte Haentjens, Rene Richard Cyr, Rene-Daniel Dubois and Serge Denoncourt signed several settings in scene of her house productions.

1990-1994 SPACE GO As from 1990, its spectacles are posted under the Productions label SPACES GO. The company has the wind in the veils. Only, it passes through also an important crisis of growth. Its activities in diffusion are definitely overdrawn. SPACE GO must move in the short run, under penalty of asphyxiation.

During this period, the artistic director starts to draw a project of programming which is impassioned for the dramaturgy of French language. In the old one as in new SPACE GO, it makes discover with the public of theater of many writings of the contemporary repertory, the new texts, the forgotten masterpieces. One plays there for the first time at Montreal Koltès, Minyana, Danis, Duriff, Nothomb, Copi, Vinaver, Lagarce.

March 9th, 1991, the board of directors carries out the name change of the company officially. Its charter is brought up to date. The Experimental Theater of the Women will belong henceforth to the history of SPACE GO, history that divide themselves many women who carry it in themselves or on the public place, each one according to its personal aspirations.

A 1995-1999 new place January 10th, 1995, SPACES GO crosses a big step by inaugurating its new theater drawn by the architect Eric Gauthier and who deserved the outstanding commendation award about the architects of Quebec in the institutional category. This project of five million dollars is developed under the aegis of Louise Beaudoin, president of the Council of 1987 to 1994. The building site evolves/moves according to the bill books and the budgets, under the monitoring of Francine d' Entremont, then direct administrative and general Co-director of SPACE GO.

In this place, GO SPACES invited the company of Gradually (now Théâtre PàP), at the time directed by Rene Richard Cyr, Claude Pitching and Marie-France Heather, to settle with residence, ensuring the presence in the programming of new texts of Québécois authors. As producer or diffuser, SPACE GO is invested in cycles of creations. Thus, the public it is invited, from one production to another, to be interested in the course of an artist, of a company, to follow the evolution of it.

New teams for new challenges Yvon Barrel, Michel Granger and Stephan Lavoie will train with Ginette Noiseux the first leadership team of the new theater. The challenges which poses the passage in a room nine times bulkier than the old one are immense. The daily priorities go to the support for the projects of production. This team will install structuring tools for management of the operations, will worry about the safeguarding of the building, will propose to the large leaders companies partnerships based on principles of patronage and will set up the first measurements of development of public for her own spectacles as for those of the other companies which occur in its place.

His/her friends having gone to raise of other challenges, it is with the complicity of Micheline Marois to the administrative office and Line Christmas with the production that the director continues her project of a new model of institution anchored in the searchs for her time and opened on the world. Energies are concentrated in the meeting with the public ones in its place. In the same moment, it initiates coproductions in partnership with other great institutions from here. SPACE GO which, during the years, wove bonds privileged with its opposite Europeans, became an important partner in the dynamics of the reciprocity.

2000 Of the present in the future Since 2000, SPACE GO sees its public growing in an important way. The poster proposes an average of nine creations per season. Room 2 is sought more and more by the artists engaged in uncommon steps. By using this room as place of discovered new texts and more demanding writings, GO continues its role of builder the public ones for the contemporary authors from here and of the foreigner.

Complicities are confirmed with the companies of the Theater of Opsis and Transthéâtre which occur in its place, and with the organizations of the TransAmériques Festival, of the International festival of Literature, and Voice of Americas. New cycles of creations and partnerships are initiated, in particular with the directors Serge Denoncourt, Martine Beaulne, Denis Marleau and UBU, and Eric Vigner and the CDDB - Theater of Lorient, Center Dramatic National. SPACE GO joins today to the artists who imagine the theater of tomorrow. It actively supports the Festival of Never Lu, and accompanies the steps by young artists.

SPACE GO profits from a very active board of directors and from an exceptional support on behalf of leaders of large companies for Quebec which take care of the maintenance and the continuation of its mission.

In 2005, the Council of Arts of Montreal decreed with SPACE GO its 20th Grand Prix for his eminent role in the evolution of the theatrical practice in Quebec, underlining his absolute engagement towards a contemporary theater, opened with all the dialogs.

SPACE GO crossed in 2004 its 25 years of existence, where each season will have written a chapter of a novel, which, as one could wish it, remains unfinished. Thus to continue…

THE PLACE

In 1995, the new Theater SPACES GO made a percussion entry in the urban landscape. The building deserves the prestigious price of Excellence about the architects of Quebec, in the institutional category.

All those, artists and spectators from here like foreigner, who attended the Theater SPACES GO since his opening get along: SPACE GO is a place of the artistic production of most powerful and more innovating on the international scene which links contemporary creation with the public contemporaries.

The place is referred to in many renovation projects of places for companies of avant-garde from abroad, in particular Wooster Group in New York and Hebel Theater in Berlin.

SPACE GO is a studio-theater with variable configuration. The success of its theater on the architectural level and of the integration of the scenographic equipment holds in its daring character, its proportions, the immediate intimacy which are established between the interpreters and the spectators whatever the configuration of the armchairs who varies from 160 to 280, its acoustic qualities in all the situations, the innovation of its technical ceiling. With human scale, extremely mobile and flexible, it allows artistic research in accessible production costs.

The public seeks with SPACE GO of the strong words through the expression of new forms. The versatility of the place, the performance as of its technical equipment, open essential prospects “for personal going beyond” in the evolution of the step of an interpreter, a creator, an originator.

The Theater SPACES GO is to some extent at the great institutions what are the departments of development and research at the large companies.

The single personality of the place is in adequacy with its mission. The meeting artist/spectator invents themselves with SPACE GO, of individual with individual, and must be able to continue to risk themselves entirely with each new generation.

Why this name, SPACES GO? GO, what a funny of word!

Word GO is not wizard, though… Resulting from the English language, it means initially and before all the pure and simple action. The sporting practice misuses it. With the theater, this short word gains the favor. Who can just as easily leave the mouth of the author, the director, the director, the lighting engineer, the manager, the scenographer, of the actor finally, who claironnent the starting signal thus. This word seemingly if simpleton, includes a farandole of theatrical acts which would not be achieved without him. It is to some extent “sesame opens” of a world to the priceless treasures which SPACE GO contains precisely.

What does GO SPACE? Directed by Ginette Noiseux, SPACE GO is a theater of ideas.

One creates there and one diffuses there theatrical fictions which envisage and accompany what emerges, which moves, which changes.

SPACE GO has its own theater, a place conceived for the contemporary theatrical practices, a tool at the disposal of those for which the theater is an art of time present.

SPACE GO is a place of beauty. SPACE GO is a place of word. SPACE GO is an open place.
