Spaarne

The Spaarne is a Rivière Dutchwoman in the province of the Holland-Septentrional . It crosses Haarlem and Spaarndam.

History

Étymologiquement, the name Spaarne could be explained like a Dérivé from spier , meaning Roseau .

. In the beginning, Spaarne was the connection between the lake of the Haarlemmermeer and IJ. Close to Spaarndam, Spaarne was thrown in the IJ. After the draining of Haarlemmermeer in 1852, Spaarne became an arm of the Ringvaart. This draining had as a consequence a clear reduction in the flow of Spaarne. From now on, the water of Ringvaart passed via Ringvaart and the Amstel towards IJ and the Zuiderzee, and Spaarne lost importance and of depth. Following the pressure of the companies at the edge of Spaarne, the municipal council decided to return Spaarne again deeper.

During the construction of the Channel of the North Sea, most of the IJ was poldérisées; however, close to Spaarndam part of this IJ remains, from now on integrated into Spaarne. The access since Spaarndam towards the Channel of the North Sea is done via the Zijkanaal C.
