Sovereign off the Seas
The Sovereign off the seas is the first of a series of three identical steamers builds by the Building sites of the Atlantic to Saint-Nazaire.
The first, the Sovereign off the seas is a challenge, at the time, for the Building sites of the Atlantic. It is the first very large passenger ship builds since the France. Between the order and the delivery, it will run out only 29 months, a record!
With this performance the Building sites of the Atlantic will be made a reputation. Following this boat, are launched the Monarch off the Seas and a year later the Majesty off the Seas .
In the night?? December 1990, a serious fire off declares on board the Monarch the Seas . At the time, the boat is in completion, the hull is finished and there remains only part of installations to be finished. In particular, the system of firefighting is not yet operational and the fire, of with an accident of welding, devastates the front third.
All the firemen of the area are put at contribution. But it takes several hours to stop the disaster. The following day, the report is clear: more than one third of the ship is to be put at breakage. The Building sites of the Atlantic have two possibilities then: to sell the boat to the scrap merchants or to repair it. It is this second which is retained. Thus, the shipyard launches out in against the watch: to cut out all the part before and to rebuild it within a minimum time.
The third boat, the Majesty off the Seas , is always in assembly run. During the cutting of the Monarch of new pieces of the Majesty were prepared. These pieces were then used to repair Monarch. For this period, the Building sites of the Atlantic worked night and day.
Thus, the Monarch off the Seas is delivered with 8 months of delay on the calendar envisaged. The Majesty off the Seas when to him is delivered in times.
Superstition
In the sailors, a boat should not bear the name of another boat. However, the Monarch off the seas bore during some time, on its stem, the name of Majesty off the seas (pieces of replacements). This fact is sufficient for the sailors to say that this boat " with the poisse".
Strange coincidence, since its construction this boat is continued by problems (fire, flood, stranding, driving break-in).
