Souvláki

The souvláki (in Greek σουβλάκι , “small skewer”) is a Greek dish composed of small pieces of meat and often of vegetables roasted on a skewer. It can be been useful on a skewer to be consumed on the inch or in a pita, kind of Greek sandwich, with trimming and sauces or in a plate with rice Pilaf. Traditionally, the meat used in Greece is Porc but, currently, one finds more and more souvlákia with the Poulet. Abroad and for the tourists, the souvláki can be made of other meat like sheep and sometimes of fish (especially of the Espadon).

The term of souvláki and its alternatives is source of confusions. According to the context, the term souvláki refers to the one of its alternatives. In certain areas and certain restaurants, the name Kebab is used to indicate a kind of souvláki (for example, with vegetables on the skewer), but it is primarily a synonym. In many areas, in particular with Athens and in the south of the Greece, a sandwich Gyros is called souvláki .

The word souvláki is a diminutive of soúvla ( σούβλα “skewer”), itself derived from Latin subula (“knife”).
