Southern bay
The Southern bay ( baía Sul , in Portuguese) is located at the Brésil, in the State of Santa Catarina. The bay is formed by the space limited between the island of Santa Catarina and the continent. It is separated from the Northern Baie, by the channel located between the parts continental and insular of the municipality of Florianópolis.
General information
The littoral of bay is made of several municipality: Florianópolis, São Jose and Palhoça. Around bay is also located the culminating points of the area: the Morro C Ribeirão, in the historical locality of Ribeirão da Ilha, with 532 m of Altitude is the point highest of the island of Santa Catarina while side of the continent, the Cambirela, culminates with more than 1000 m of altitude.
Its banks, by place, are occupied by fast tracks like those giving access to the bridges connecting the island to the continent and the airport of Florianópolis, the Aéroport Hercílio Luz.
One finds many islands of small size in bay: ilha das Vinhas, ilha C Largo, ilha Maria Francisca, ilha das Laranjeiras or ilha back Papagaios in the extreme south of bay, in the channel which joined the Atlantic Ocean.
The principal rivers being jettant in bay are: the Rio Tavares and the ribeirão da Ilha on the insular side; the Rio Imaruí, the Rio Aririú and the Rio Cubatão on the continental side.
The banks of Southern bay comprise two large Mangrove S: that of Rio Tavares on the island and that of Palhoça.
In the extreme south of bay, a Phare was installed with the Point of the Shipwrecked men ( Ponta of Naufragados in Portuguese) because of the dangerosity of the place, which was worth its name.
The southern entry of bay was autrfois defended by two fortresses, now closed down, the fortress of Araçatuba and the extremely of Naufragados.
