Southern Air is defined as “ the French Airline company of the Indian Ocean ”. Its currency is “ All starts with a good voyage ”.

Air Austral is a regular company based with the Aéroport Meeting Roland Garros (RUN), on the communal territory of Sainte-Marie, near Saint-Denis of the Meeting.

Organization

The principal shareholder of Southern Air is a Société of mixed economy, Sematra. The latter joins together the District council of the Meeting, the General advice of the Meeting, the Chamber of commerce and of industry of the Meeting and some others.

Its managing director is Gerard Ethève, who is also president of the directory.

In 2004, its turnover was of almost 200 million euros.

The company employs 600 people, based with the Réunion and in metropolis.

History

Air Austral was created in October 1974 to serve the scattered islands of the Indian Ocean and began its business transactions in March 1975 under the name of Réunion Air Service . Very quickly, in August 1977, it launches out in the service road of Mayotte, destination without competition which will support its rapid development thereafter.

Re-elected Air Meeting in 1987, the company takes its current name in 1990 with the profit of an entry to the capital of Air France.

In 1997, it inaugurates direct flights towards Harare with the Zimbabwe, a destination which it gives up in 2000.

Hitherto confined with the Middle-distance in the south-western zone of the Indian Ocean, Air Southern begins finally the service road of the Aéroport Roissy-Charles-of-Gaulle of Paris the June 28th 2003.

Soon, Air France estimates that the company réunionnaise competition on the line Paris - Réunion and seeks to separate some 30,4% of its capital which it still holds.

In the middle of the year 2005, Jacques de Chateauvieux proposes to repurchase them by the means of Bourbon Axa Investment Fund, a joint venture of Bourbon and Axa based with the Mauritius. Nassimah Dindar and the public authorities shareholders of the Sematra worry consequently about a possible change of strategy of the company to the detriment of the economy of the Meeting. The proposal is disallowed. It is the réunionnaise subsidiary company Agricultural credit which becomes shareholder of Southern Air within the framework of an operation of financial Portage three years.

The towns of Lyon and Marseilles are served twice per week starting from November 1st, 2005.

Since March 27th, 2007, Southern Air serves Toulouse at a rate of two flights per week. In the long term, the company could serve the Asia, and particularly the China and the India.

2007 the company thinks of launching Paris Sydney and Paris Noumea via the Meeting a correspondence will be installation between Sydney and Noumea with the French company Aircalin, it also in negotiation with Boeing for other B777-200. To make a stopover by the Meeting is simpler than to make a stopover in Tokyo: considering the meeting is French that means a simplicity to go to Noumea.

Some of the flights of the Meeting towards the Europe have as a starting point the Aéroport of Saint-Pierre Pierrefonds (ZSE), with Saint-Pierre, in the south of the island. They make a stopover with the Aéroport Meeting Roland Garros, in north, before moving for good in direction of the Europe.

The flights towards the Mauritius are direct.
