The southern Triangle is small a Constellation of the Southern hemisphere of which the three star S most luminous, of second and third Magnitude connect, form a equilateral Triangle roughly.
History
The southern Triangle was introduced for the first time by the Italian navigator
Amerigo Vespucci in
1503. Reinvented by the navigators Dutch
Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and
Frederick de Houtman at the end of the 16th century and introduced by
Johann Bayer into his
Uranometria in
1603.
Observation of stars
; Localization of the constellation
The southern triangle is located at the feet of the Centaure. On the basis of alpha and Béta of the
Centaur, the triangle is located at ten degrees in South-east.
; Form constellation
Its form is easily locatable, if the conditions of visibilities are satisfactory. The southern triangle approaches an equilateral triangle well.

Atria (α Trianguli Australis)
Atria (α Trianguli Australis) is the most brilliant star of the constellation of the southern Triangle with a Magnitude connect of +1,91 (the 43e the most brilliant star of the night sky). Distant of approximately 400 light-years, it is a giant orange red 2 000 times more brilliant than the
Sun, 9 times more massive and extending on a ua.
Other stars
β Trianguli Australis, magnitude connects +2,83, is a giantess relatively close, since distant 40 light-years.
γ Trianguli Australis, the last top of the triangle, is a white star of the principal sequence magnitude +2,87.
R Trianguli Australis is a variable Céphéide, oscillating between magnitudes +6,0 and +6,8 over one 3,4 days period.
Celestial objects
The constellation of the southern Triangle lodges the open Amas NGC 6025, the planetary nebulas NGC 5844 and NGC 5979 and the Galaxie S NGC 6156 and IC 4595.
One finds there also the spiral galaxies IC 4584 and IC 4585 which are in interaction, IC 4584 being partially deformed by the Forces of tide of IC 4585.
