Southern Caracara
The southern Caracara ( Phalcoboenus australis ), also called cararaca or carancho of the Falkland Islands , is a diurnal Rapace of the family of the Falconidae.
The plumage of the adults is almost black, with the legs and the lore oranges and the stained nozzle of gray. The young people clearly have an orange and red bottom which they lose after their first moult. The adult final plumage is acquired only after five years.
Southern Caracara is in several islands of the Ground of Fire, but it is with the Falkland Islands (Falkland) that it is most abundant with a population estimated at 500 couples (where it is called Johnny Rook ).
The species is regarded as threatened.
