South side (Chicago)

The South Side is a large district of the town of Chicago in the Illinois. Located at the south of the downtown area, it is famous to be the “metropolis black.” It is bordered by the 25e and the 47e Rue.

History

After the First World War, thousands of Afro-américain S left the areas of South of the country to settle in Chicago. The district of South Side became a black ghetto in the years 1960. To face overpopulation, the municipality had decided to build great whole of buildings ( housing projects ).

Current revitalization

Like other black districts of the United States (Harlem), South Side tries to leave violence, in particular thanks to the arts centres (Community Art Center, Little Black Pearl Workshop), the theaters (Harold Washington Theater) or the art galleries (Steel Life Art Gellery).
