The South of the France indicates the southern France. This zone with vague contours tends to coincide with the Occitanie, whose contours are more precise. The “Accent of the South” is in fact an accent Occitan. In the South, one finds for example the Canal of the South or the Pic of the South.

The South indicates also one of the old large French railway companies, the Compagnie of the railroads of the South.

It is also said that Valence is “  the door of the South  ”, because … it is in Valence that the South starts… (and Valence is around the 45 {{E}} parallel). On a similar mode for the south-western quarter of France, Brive-the-Strapping woman is sometimes called “  laughing it gate of the South  ” and is located also near the 45 {{E}} parallel.

One of the stations of Brussels is called the Gare of Brussels-Midday because it is the station from where the trains leave in direction the South of France.

A French area is called the Midday-Pyrenees, to see Histoire of the Midday-Pyrenees.

A similar name exists in Italian to indicate the south of the Italy: the the Mezzogiorno (literally, middle of the day, which is also the exact etymology of French midday).
