The South Sydney Rabbitohs (also called Souths or Bunnies ) are a club of Rugby to XIII Australian which dispute the championship of NRL. The club was founded in 1908 and made party of the founders teams of the NSWRL. The rabbitohs are traditionally based in the south of Sydney, with Redfern more precisely. South Sydney is the most titrated team of Australia with 20 championships. However they more gained it since 1971.

History

The origin of the name of rabbitohs would come owing to the fact that many players during the depression caught and sold rabbits to survive, these people were called the rabbitohs . There exists another version as for the origin of the name, the ground of South Sydney would have been truffle of rabbit holes ( Rabbit hole ).

South Sydney is one of the eight clubs founders of the championship of Sydney in 1908. They gained the first championship finally by beating Eastern Surburbs. After having gained the championship in 1914 and 1918, South Sydney will know its first golden age during the period 1925-1932, by gaining 7 titles out of 8.

This domination of Souths on the championship will be worth the nickname of pride off to them the league (pride of the league).

During the years 1950, Souths gain 5 championships under the crook of Clive Churchill, player emblematic of the rabittohs.

Period 67-71 will be their third and last golden age.

During the Eighties, the club has good performances but does not gain titles.

In the Nineties, South Sydney knows financial problems. The policy of rationalization of the NRL will be fatal for them, the club is excluded from the championship as from 2000. But following an legal action and in a great popular enthusiasm in their favor, South Sydney is reinstated in 2002.

In 2006, the club is repurchased by the actor Russell Crowe, enthusiast to support bunnies since his childhood. In 2007 the rabbithos are qualified for the play offs, that had not arrived more since 1989.
