South Saturn Delta

A few months only after the publication of First Rays Off The New Rising Sun , Experience Hendrix LLC proposed South Saturn Delta . This new collection of recordings studio mixes new and well-known of the catalog, inalienable titles or ever republished out of CD.

Experience Hendrix however had sufficient material to propose a First Rays Of The New Rising Sun Volume 2 , proposing the remainder of the titles of quality likely to be reproduced on the ultimate album studio of Jimi Hendrix. It of it is nothing: South Saturn Delta gathers titles of all the groups of Jimi Hendrix, by disregarding any chronological consideration. The fitting of the titles is unfortunately not always very coherent.

The known material

Let us return initially on the material already published officially. The integrality of The Cry Of Coils finding itself in First Rays Of The New Rising Sun , it is without surprise that one redécouvre here extracts of Rainbow Bridge - Original Motion Picture Sound Track , War Heroes and Loose Ends .

Resulting from Rainbow Bridge

On the 8 titles of this album, only half was found on First Rays Of The New Rising Sun .

Look Over Yonder , new of the Experiment recorded on October 22nd, 1968 with the TTG Studios, finds its place perfectly here. Although recorded after the publication of Electric Ladyland , this title seemed intended for the oubliettes: one does not find it on any the lists of Jimi Hendrix. Nor in its interviews. And titrates it was the subject of no attempt in concert. For as much, it is a solid title of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, very rock'n'roll. The style is closer to the beginnings of the Experiment… what is not truly surprising, insofar as its origins go back to 1967 (cf Mr. Bad Luck , so known under the title of Mr. Lost Soul , one official moment on the box Lifelines - The Jimi Hendrix Story ).

It without surprise that one finds Pali Gap , is immortalisé on July 1st, 1970, the large one forgotten First Rays Of The New Rising Sun .

If the choice to leave of with dimensions Hear My Train A-Comin' is justified (the title doubly is Live, and one will find it on Jimi Hendrix: Blues ), that not to retain the version studio Star Spangled Banner is more astonishing.

Resulting from War Heroes

The choice is here without surprised and judicious of the three titles selected.

Bleeding Heart , Hendrixienne extrapolation of traditional of Elmore James, undoubtedly had his place on First Rays Of The New Rising Sun . , Hendrix was the March 24th, 1970 not satisfied to revisit the blues on a tempo rock'n'roll: the end of the grid of agreements is original, and of its vintage. As for the parts of guitars, they are remarkable: a Mixage presenting the only parts exists in the circuit of the collectors…

Tax Free is a fall of Jimi Hendrix Experience, composed by a Swedish duet (Bo Hansson & Janne Karlsson), often played Live by the Experiment. This catch, recorded on May 1st, 1968, is of first order. The group impresses by its cohesion and its power. The three parts of guitar of Jimi Hendrix are perfectly overlapping the ones with the others: its talents of arranger and improviser are here with the honor. It should be noted that the instrument which could seem to be a Orgue is well part of guitar (a priori while passing by a cabin Leslie).

Midnight is one of the last titles studio recorded by the Experiment (meetings of the April 1st, th and 3rd 1969). Two other catches of this titles (at various stages of its evolution) are present on Hear My Music : Slow fox trot Version (February 14th, 1969) and, nearer, Trash Man (April 3rd, 1969).

Resulting from Loose Ends

One could have expected to find excel it Like Down Hard one Me Baby , but perhaps this title was judged too near to Bleeding Heart ? Burning Desire undoubtedly did not correspond to the criteria of audio quality to be presented here.

Only two titles remain. The Star' S That Play With Laughing Sam' S Dice , in the version Stereo where the guitar is mixed very ahead. A criticism all the same: this title, published the alive one of Jimi Hendrix like face B of Burning Off The Midnight Lamp in August 1967, does it have really its place here? The 3 first Singles of the Experiment are available like no-claims bonus tracks on Are You Experienced . Why not to have made in the same way with Axis: Does Bold As Coil and this face B? The mixing was certainly different… but the question deserves to be raised.

The other survivor is Drifter' S Escape , but in a version slightly different from that proposed on Loose Ends . The BASIC track is identical to the version of Loose Ends , but the parts of guitars are not identical (they remain however in a very close spirit), there is no cow-beautiful in percussion and the mixing differs a little. There still, the publication of this title was essential: Hendrix magnifie once again a title of the John Wesley Harding of Bob Dylan. Recorded on June 17th, 1970, this title would not have demerit on First Rays Of The New Rising Sun . The obsessional front played by Billy Cox serves perfectly environment of a piece where Hendrix shows obvious vocal qualities. It does not refer there a true solo, but of guitar which punctuates the text by amplifying its emotional impact.

A diverting choice

The other resumption of Bob Dylan here presents is more than debatable. Indeed, one finds All Along The Watchtower , with a mixing flat, whose presence is justified without problem on a pirate, possibly on a box, but with difficulty on an album new studio.

The new material

The remainder of South Saturn Delta is composed of new material (except for the piece titrates, but the version presented here is more complete). For the fan of long time, it was of course the most awaited part album. Unfortunately, anecdotic the côtoie excels it there… And thus a large disappointment for those which hoped for a resumption in coherent hand of the Hendrixien catalog.

Return on these news, in a chronological way:

Little Wing , recorded on October 14th, 1967, has Little Wing only the name: it is instrumental presenting an embryonic version of Angel where Hendrix explores the grid accompanied by Mitch Mitchell. One is in the register of the Démo: the official publication of such a title is completely regrettable. Even the box ( The Jimi Hendrix Experiment Box Set ) presents more succeeded versions of work…

Sweet Angel '', recorded one month later (on November 13rd, 1967) is not more interesting: this Démo of Angel makes certainly it possible to see the advance of the title… but one sinks in the sadly anecdotic one, the more so as one finds from now on this title in a more complete version on disc 2 of the box crimson The Jimi Hendrix Experience Box Set .

A fall of Electric Ladyland , already known of the amateurs follows: South Saturn Delta . Recorded on June 14th, 1968, it was available one moment on Live & Unreleased - The Radio Show , but in a published version, and with notes of misleading small pockets. Indeed, much to its regret, Michael Brecker played forever with Jimi Hendrix. The choice of this title is suitable: except subject on First Rays Off The New Rising Sun , this piece presents the most complete version of a recurrent theme at Hendrix. It will be noted on this subject that it is more the arrangement of coppers and the battery which give with dimensions the Jazz of this catch, because the composition remains very Hendrixienne. The catch is not inevitably completely succeeded, but it is very interesting: it shows the interest of the guitarist for the jazz, and at the same time makes it possible to see what separates it from this universe.

Here He Comes Man is a new taking again the great tradition of the hybrids of Alan Douglas: various catches were used to arrive at the end result. Recorded with the TTG Studios on October 29th, 1968, this version Lover Man presents very the Experiment post- Electric Ladyland in a vein rock'n'roll, not far away from the Look Over Yonder recorded one week earlier. Within the framework of an album new studio, the version of 1970 presented on the box crimson would have made the deal better: more compact, it is successful definitely. For as much, this title remains interesting: it was then the first official version studio Lover Man .

Message To The Universe To Love , recorded in Hit Factory on August 28th, 1969 is a good surprise: it is the first testimony official studio of Gypsy Sun & Rainbows. This version, undoubtedly recorded Live in studio is not finished: the song is far from being perfectly posed. On the other hand, Hendrix is inspired there and final proposes to us confining with the Free jazz with the height of its talent.

Power Off Drunk , recorded with the Record Seedling on January 21st, 1970, is the first official version studio of this traditional of Band Of Gypsys since the version proposed by Alan Douglas on Crash Landing . Hendrix worked much on this title, and it is legitimate to present a version studio of it. The more so as vocal arrangements are different from the version Live. A large flat however: the mixing of this catch is diverting. The listener finds himself drowned in the reverberation (whereas on other titles, it is not very present, which returns contrast shocking).

On the other hand, the last title of the collection, Midnight Lightning , recorded with the Record Seedling on March 23rd, 1970, is a true nugget. Very different from the versions recorded with its last group, Hendrix plays here in a style seldom exploited… and yet controlled hand of Master. One is indeed in a register close to John Lee Hooker: Hendrix, only, mark the rate/rhythm of its foot, and is accompanied by a finger picking magnifié by its phrased, whose absence of saturation makes it possible to seize least subtlety. Hendrix is essential as a singer: rythmiquement very fluid, its voice is mouthful of a feeling plunging to deepest of its roots, and at the same time completely personal.
