History

Origins

South Park began in 1992 when Trey Parker and Matt Stone, students with the Université of Colorado, met at the time of a course of Cinéma and created a Short film Animation called Jesus vs. Frosty . This film made with very few means present of the prototypes of the main characters of South Park , including a character resembling Cartman, but called “Kenny”, and an anonymous character, who resembles Kyle, bringing back to the life a fatal Snowman with a magic hat.

In 1995, after having seen the film, the producing executive of FOX, Brian Graden, required of Parker and Stone to create a second short film to send it to his/her friends like chart of Christmas. Heading The Spirit off Christmas , it resembles much more the style of the future series, and puts in scene a combat of Martial arts then a discussion between Jesus and the Father Christmas on the true direction of Christmas. This video was later included in the episode the Cycle of the excrement in which Stan, Kyle, Cartman, Kenny and Mr. Hankey “saves” Christmas in their city. This video very popular and was very diffused on Internet. This success led the creators to discuss in order to create a series, initially with the FOX, then with Comedy Central, where the first episode was diffused the August 13rd 1997. A clip of this short film can be seen in the credits of opening of South Park on billboard; Jesus vs. Frosty can also be seen in the repeat broadcasts.

Evolution

The first episodes of South Park wanted to be shocking and had a humor tending more towards the style Monty Python that in the last episodes. Although the satire was used occasionally during the first years, it became more obvious around the eighth season. For example, of the episodes put in scene the arrival of Michael Jackson at South Park ( Jefferson ), the boys going to see the Passion of Christ ( the Passion of the Jew ), of the Ouvrier S which lose their work because of Immigrating S come from the future ( Sticky the ) or Paris Hilton selling a video kit to be as “whore” as it ( video Kit for stupid too spoiled whore ).

The team of the series spent three months to carry out the episode controls, Cartman has an anal probe , because of her technique of Animation image by image and of her paper silhouettes. The current episodes copy the original style by using modern tools for animation by Ordinateur - initially PowerAnimator, then Maya (that Parker and Stone described as if they “built a sand castle with a bulldozer”). This method makes it possible to carry out the episodes very quickly and thus to answer the Actualité within very short times. For example, the episode of the December 17th 2003 ( Christmas in Canada ) depicts the capture of Saddam Hussein three days only after its capture by the Armed forces of the United States, referring even to the “hole of spider” where it was found. In the case of this episode and of that of Elián González ( Quintuplets contorsionists ), the creators stopped and changed the production of an episode to concentrate on these events. Another example is the episode the Super-Sorter which in the beginning was diffused only eight days after the presidential elections of 2000 and which puts in scene the election of delegated of a class of Maternelle which was delayed by, inter alia, a named undecided girl “Flora”, an obvious reference to the undecided counting of the voices of the state of Florida. Brilliant-O was created in three days, which is more the short duration of creation of an episode of this series.

In 2002, the episode Bérets gratos was diffused. In this episode, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg decide to modify the first shutter of the saga Indiana Jones, the Adventurers of the lost arch . This way of changing films a long time after their exit into the room revolts the boys, who try to prevent the two men from leaving the remasterized version. Little time after this diffusion, Lucas truths and Spielberg announced that they were not going to modify the Adventurers of the lost arch for its exit in DVD contrary to the rumors. Stone and Parker declared later that their episode had prevented any modification For comparison, the creation of an episode of the Simpson lasts nine months, whereas that of an episode of South Park takes approximately six days. This makes it possible to parody events which take place little time before the diffusion of the episode, as the capture of Saddam Hussein ( Christmas in Canada ).

Music

The generic of opening of the series was composed by the group Primus. This song was remixée three times during the series, and certain words were modified. In the second part of the season 10, the credits is “Whamola” interpreted by Colonel Claypool' S Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, extracted the album Purple Onion . Claypool is the Chanteur and Bassiste of Primus and Frog Brigade.

The words which Kenny sings, like all its counterparts in the series (except for two sentences in episode 807, Jefferson , and of its sentence in South Park, the film: Longer, larger and not cut ) are scrambled by its Anorak, which recovers all its face except its eyes. However, its words were revealed by South Park Studio. In the seasons 1 and 2, it says “I coils girls with big conceited titties, I coils girls with deep vaginas” (what can result in “I love the girls with large nipples, I love the girls with deep Vagin S”), season 3 with the season 5, it says “I cuts got has 10-inch penis, uses your mouth yew you want to clean it” (“I have a Pénis of ten inches (25 cm) length, uses your mouth if you want to clean it”). season 7 with the first part of the season 10 Kenny says “One day I' L Be old enough to stick my dick in Britney' S butt” (“One day I will be enough old to put my cock in the bottom of Britney”). The current words (starting from the episode Make Coils, Not Warcraft ) are: “Get has job you silly person Nature' S bitch is really hurtin”.

The generally inintelligibles counterparts of Kenny made it possible to the creators to be diffused without being censured on the television channels on many occasions, although the remainder of its counterparts can be generally included/understood. Indeed, given in their context, they are rather easy to guess.

Popular songs such as the Mother of Kyle is a large bitch are originating in the series, but the musical capacities of the creators were often not used until the diffusion of the film. The original soundtrack of film is made up of songs like Mountain Town , Resistance Medley , Uncle Fucka , What Would Brian Boitano Do? (a song on Brian Boitano, celebrates artistic skater), I' m Super , and Blame Canada (named with the Oscars, to see low). Many songs of this film parody those of films of Disney. For example, Mountain Town , is very similar to the song Belle of the Beautiful one and the Animal . Up Ther is a parody of two songs different of Disney, Out There of the Uneven one of Notre-Dame and Part off Your World of the Small Siren . Resistance Medley makes fun of the Poor wretches , and Tonight of West Side Story . James Hetfield, singer of Metallica, sings on Little Boy, You' Re Going to Hell , although it is not credited.

Parker and Stone sometimes interpreted these songs (and others) under the name of DVDA.

In the series, Eric Cartman sings many times to show a forgery Altruisme or Optimisme, hiding his real motivations. In the Fall of the red sledge , it sings Poo-Choo Train , a Christmas carol to convince Mr. Hankey and the Father Christmas whom it is worthy to receive from the Christmas presents. In Rather of the kind country , Cartman sings the song of Paula Cole I Don' T Want to Wait while striking a man to death. Cartman also sang a song in homage to its super sorter Dawson in the episode the Super-Sorter and, in the Death of Eric Cartman , it sings Make It Right with Butters while trying to be made forgive its sins. In Roger Ebert should eat less fatty , Cartman sings the song of Donna Summer, She Works Hard For The Money during a hearing for Cheesy Poofs. In the episode Simpson already did it , Cartman sings how the people of the seas will take it along far from this ground “full with hippies”. In the episode the Redheads , he once sings a song on the Tolérance he carried out that he was not Roux whereas he had just convinced all the redheads of the town of exterminate all therusset-red ones. Cartman off uses also the song Heat the Moment in the episode Kenny dies to convince the Sénat of the United States of réautoriser research on the original cells. And, of course, Cartman has a fake which forces it to finish the song As Sail Away of the group Styx as soon as he hears the first words. As soon as it knew it, Kyle, which hates Cartman, took advantage of it and obliged Cartman to finish the song so much once that Cartman became literally inintelligible.

Cartman was also the singer of the group Faith + 1 (name diverted to stick to the spirit of the episode and inspired by the American rock group Faith No More), a Christian group which it formed with Butters and Token in the episode Christian Rock , singing many “Christian” songs on Jesus, by taking songs sexually explicit and in substituent the word “baby” by “Jesus”.

In Large bottom and draft , the puppet of Cartman (which pronounces its name “Yénnifer Lopez” and which is actually a swindler of the name of Mitch Connor) recorded a hit entitled Tacos Flavored Kisses ( Baisers with the taste of tacos ), which involved the anger of “true” the Jennifer Lopez (ruining her career, it ends then up working in a restaurant of tacos).

The additional musics are composed by Primus and Isaac Hayes which was the voice of Chef and which sang songs sexually explicit to explain to the children certain adult topics.

Many episodes have very melodramatic musics in order to propose the nonsense of an emotional scene (for example, the music melancholic person played in background music when Timmy separates from its turkey, Gobbles, in Thanksgivings ).

Controversies

The series had to face many controversies. Indeed, it depicts what good number of people consider being of the subjects Tabou S, of the use of the Vulgarité, ( Y' has some in the ventilo ) with the satire of subjects such as the Religion and the Culte S (like the Scientologie), the sexuality ( the Camp of died of tolerance ) and the Global warming ( Two days before the day after tomorrow ). Stone and Parker is described as being “offenders not making any distinction” and very often attacks on the two sides without really giving an opinion.

South Park being a series provocante, many spokespersons protested against this “offensive” program. The American and preserving group of monitoring of the Média S Parents Television Council frequently criticized South Park for their puffing vulgarity and their taste for the incorrect Politiquement.

For example, in the episode Y' has some in the ventilo , South Park beats a record by using 162 times the word “Merde” without being censured. In the same way, in the episode entitled With Apologies to Jesse Jackson , the word “Nègre” is used 42 times.

In December 2005, the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights protested against the final episode of the season 9, Bloody Mary , for its representation of the Virgin Mary bleeding of the Rectum. The group gained a victory when Comedy Central déprogramma voluntarily the episode which coincided with the beginning of the holidays of Christmas. beginning 2006, the persons in charge of Comedy Central denied the fact that they had accepted the request of the group, namely to withdraw the episode of the next diffusions and of DVD S. Comedy Central repeated the episode of many times since.

South Park also parodied the Scientologie in certain episodes. In the majority of them, however, it is not mentioned as such but it is clearly criticized there. The episode more discussed on this subject was Piégé in the wall cupboard what caused what the media called the “Wall cupboard Spoils” (or “Closetgate” in the beginning). The episode makes fun of the worship and the celebrities who follow it, including Tom Cruise. When Comedy Central withdrew the episode of its programming at the last minute, Cruise was shown to threaten Paramount to withdraw promotion of its last film if the episode were repeated (Paramount and Comedy Central are both directed by Viacom).

Moreover, South Park makes fun regularly of the Judaïsme and the Mormonisme. However, none of both Communauté S made speak its representatives on this subject.

Success

South Park is since its creation a broad success in the countries where it is diffused. The episodes of the season 10 brought together with each diffusion 3.000.000 televiewers with the the United States on average. The provocative character of the series sometimes enabled him to increase its scores of Audience. Thus, after the complaints and the call to the boycott of the episode Bloody Mary by New Zealand catholic associations, this last attracted six times more televiewers than usually. In France, the chain Game One, which diffuses the series, knows its stronger rates of audience to each new diffusion.

Recurrent themes

South Park uses frequently different Thème S, such as the Politique, the Racisme, the rights of the homosexual , the Environnement, the Censure and the Religion.

Anecdotes

  • In 1995, George Clooney accepted a version cassette of the Spirit of Christmas , the video-chart of Christmas who will inspire South Park . It found it so funny that it made several copies and that it sent it to all his friends in the surroundings of Los Angeles; Stone and Parker were so grateful that they invited it to play a part in the series (the voice of Sparky, the homosexual dog of Stan). It appeared later in South Park, the film: Longer, larger and not cut in the role of the doctor who does not manage to save Kenny. In spite of this history, Parker and Stone parody Clooney because of its declarations on its political opinions in the series ( Danger Snobfog ) but also in their other film TEAM America, police force of the world .
