Until the construction of the south-eastern Fountain , the years 530 - 520 following the ceramics found at this place, the south-eastern part of the Agora of Athens consisted of private houses.

The identification of the building is certain thanks to the discovery of a canal system. It is more or less certain that the fountain was set up under the order of the Pisistratides and its presence testifies to the importance of the Agora and thus of a water provision necessary.
