Located in the province of the Labourd, Souraïde belongs to the Basque Country.
Its name Basque is Zuraide .

Geography
Situation
Souraïde is a commune of the Basque province of the Labourd, S the Spain located at fifteen kilometers of the Spanish border and at fifteen minutes by the road of the Basque Côte. It developed with the foot of the Ereby mount.
Access
Souraïde is served by the secondary road D918, between Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle and Espelette.
Hydrography
The commune is crossed by affluents of the Nivelle, Amezpetuko Erreka and Opalazioko erreka.An affluent of the Nive, the brook zubizabaleta and its tributary, the mandopichako erreka, also sprinkle the commune.
Another brook, the Urloko erreka which is thrown further in Antzara erreka, other flow of Nive, crosses also the territory of the commune.

Toponymy
The toponym Souraïde appears in the forms Sanctus-Jacobus de Souraïde (1693, collations of the diocese of Bayonne) and Mendialde in 1793.The toponym Amezpetu appears in the form Amespetzu (1863, topographic dictionary Basque Béarn-Country).
The toponym Ordotz appears in the form Ordotx (1863, topographic dictionary Basque Béarn-Country). The toponym Gorosto is mentioned in 1757 in the collations of the diocese of Bayonne).
History
- the law of March 4th, 1790, which determined a new administrative landscape of France by creating departments and districts, decided birth of the department of the the Low-Pyrenees by joining together the Béarn, the Gascon grounds of Bayonne and Bidache, and the three French Basque provinces. For these last, three districts were created: Mauléon, Saint-Palate and Ustaritz, which replaced the baillage Labourd. By abuse of power of the local leaders, the head office of Ustaritz was transferred almost immediately to Bayonne. Its Directory encouraged a great number of municipalities to adopt new names in conformity with the spirit of the Revolution. Thus Souraïde was called Mendialde, Ustaritz became Marat-on-Nive, Itxassou Union, Arbonne Constante, Saint-Etienne-with-Baïgorry Thermopyles, Saint-Palate Mount-Bidouze, Louhossoa Mountain-on-Nive, Saint-Jean-Foot-of-Port Nive-Frank, Saint-Jean-with-Luz Chauvinistic-Dragon, of the name of a young dead soldier to the combat and Ainhoa Mendiarte.

The town hall of Souraïde is installed in a house dating from XVIe century, old priory, then presbytery until 1905 before accommodating the town hall.

The origin of the church Saint-Jacques-the-Major goes back to XIIe siècle.The commune is on the Voie of Baztan, way of the Pèlerinage of Saint-Jacques-to-Compostelle which crosses the the Pyrenees more to the west and by the collar low (Col of Belate, 847 m).
