Soundgarden is an American rock group originating in Seattle. They are regarded as one of the four groups of Seattle to have defined the style Grunge with Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam with beginning of the year 90.
At the first hours, Cornell assumes at the same time the battery and the song, but very quickly the group seeks a beater so that Cornell can concentrate on the song. Thus Scott Sundquist joined the group. Two titles are recorded and published on compilation Deep Six at C/Z Records , also containing titles of Green River, Skin Yard and Melvins.
In 1986, Sundquist leaves the group and it is Matt Cameron, the beater of Skin Yard which takes its place. Soundgarden signs a contract the binder with the label Sub Pop . Two maxis (EPs) are recorded: Screaming Life in 1987 and Fopp in 1988. They will be republished in 1990 pennies the form of a compilation Screaming Life/Fopp .
The large labels are interested more and more in this group which goes up, but it is for SST Records that they will record their first album Ultramega OK in 1988, album which is worth to them a nomination with the Grammy Awards. In 1989, Soundgarden leaves its first album for the major A&M Records , entitled Louder Than Love . Yamamoto gives up the group to continue its studies after the exit of the album. Jason Everman, old of Nirvana, will replace it a time but it is Ben Shepherd who will inherit low finally.
It is thus a new formation which attacks the recording of the third opus, Badmotorfinger during 1991. The album knows one big hit but is eclipsed by the tidal wave Nevermind which carries all on its passage and propels the scene grunge of Seattle in first line. The success of the movement grunge allows certain titles of Soundgarden of touching a larger audience, thus Outshined and Rusty Cage succeeds in boring on the alternate radios and even on MTV. The group starts a joint round with Guns Pink to promote the album and a video live Motorvision benefits from it to turn which will be marketed later. Soundgarden also takes part in the round Lollapalooza in 1992 when it divides the poster with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam and Ministry inter alia.
The group makes an appearance in the film Singles where he interprets Birth Ritual . The song is reproduced on the original soundtrack of film just like a song that Chris Cornell interprets in solo, Seasons . The film also contains a clip of the version demonstration of Spoonman , title new which will be reproduced on the future album Superunknown in 1994.
Superunknown definitively devotes the group near the general public. Individual the Black Hole Sun , Spoonman , The Day I Try to Live and Fell one Black Days gain a whole a deserved success. The album skilfully interferes the creativity its predecessors and a smoother sound, adapted better to the radio diffusion. The texts are done there rather lugubrious evoking in turn drug-addiction, the suicide and the depression. Many songs comprise Eastern sonorities, in particular Fell one Black Days , Head Down and Half .
Soundgarden produces itself what will be its last album Down one the Upside . The album is appreciably lighter than the precedents, which the group then explains by a will to explore and to open with other sounds. Three individual will be extracted from the album: Pretty Noose , Blow Up the Outside World and Burden in My Hand . Nevertheless tensions appear within the group during the recording. Thayil sharply reproaches Cornell for wanting to give up the heavy fronts of guitar, become the trademark of the group. In spite of good criticisms, the album does not manage to reach the sales of Superunknown .
During the promotional round which follows, the climate worsens within the group. At the time of the last representation, to Honolulu in February 1997, following engineering problems Shepherd throws its low rage and leaves the scene. Cornell will have to finish the concert in solo and has cappella. April 9th, 1997, Soundgarden announces its separation. A compilation of its best titles, A-Sides leaves to the following autumn.
Cornell will record an album solo in 1999, Euphoria Morning , then will join the former musicians of Rage Against the Machine to form Audioslave. Cameron will be devoted to its parallel project Wellwater Conspiracy and will join Pearl Jam on their round of 1998 (Yield Tour) before integrating definitively the formation of Eddie Vedder. Thayil occurred at the time of a concert anti OMC at the time of the top of OMC in Seattle in 1999. It was accompanied on scene by Jello Biafra (ex-singer of the Dead Kennedys), Krist Novoselic (ex-bass player of Nirvana) and of the threshing-machine Gina Mainwal. Thayil also took part in 2001 in the recording of the album 999 Levels off Undo of Steve Fisk, like with the project PROBOT of Dave Grohl in 2004. Shepherd, as for him, left in round with Mark Lanegan and left after ten years waiting the second album its group Hater in 2005, while taking part occasionally in the albums of Wellwater Conspiracy.
