Soumagne

Soumagne (in Walloon Soûmagne ) is a common French-speaking of Belgium located in Walloon region in the Province of Liege.

The commune counted at July 1st 2004 15.143 inhabitants (7 469 men and 7.674 women), for a surface of 27,22 km ².

The end is Tunnel of Soumagne is in the commune. This tunnel is the longest railway tunnel of Belgium (6,4 km), allowing the trains at high speed resulting from the Gare of Liege-Guillemins to Liege leaving the valley the Meuse to reach the Plateau of Herve in direction of the Germany. To note that the village of Soumagne-Bas is now called Soumagne-Valley, and that Soumagne-Haut, principal agglomeration of the entity, developed around the old station of Micheroux and the trunk road 3, overflowing on the old communes of Soumagne, Micheroux and Mélen.

Soumagne is also the common Belgian to have only sheltered a center of maternity S during the Second world war (located in current Provincial Domaine of Wégimont): famous tristements " Lebensborn".
