Soultzbach-the-Baths

Soultzbach-the-Baths is a common French, located in the department of the Haut-Rhin and the area Alsace.

Geography

Small village on the Wine trail of Alsace, Soultzbach-the-Baths is crossed by Krebsbach and Runsbach and is located at 6 km of Munster and at 14 km of Colmar. The communes bordering are Wasserbourg, Griesbach-with-Valley and Wihr-with-Valley.

History

Soultzbach-the-baths is quoted for the first time in 1211. The origin of its name comes from Sulcebach : Sulz , salt spring, and Bach , brook. The lords of Hattstatt strengthened it in 1275 and became a city. After their extinction in 1585 their heirs, Schauenburg, transformed the castle into hotel of baths. The baths of Soultzbach, launched towards 1615, were very appreciated with in all Europe like place of cure and leisures. Close to the limit of Soultzbach and Gueberschwihr the castle of Schrankenfels is, frame at the beginning of the 13th century by the lords of Gueberschwihr. At the 14th century it belonged to Hattstatt and was destroyed at the 15th century.

  • Consequences of the defeat of 1871:
    • the treaty of Frankfurt of May 10th, 1871, ratifying the preliminary treaties of Versailles of the February 26th, 1871 and March 2nd, 1871, gives up Alsace and part of Lorraine to the German Empire, controlled of an iron hand by the Bismarck chancellor.
  • Administration of the small communes starting from 1874
    • Starting from January 1st, 1874, by decision of an imperial law dated June 20th, 1872, the constitutional legislation of the German Empire is applied to Alsace-Lorraine. It lays down the methods of the municipal authorities of which here essence.
The small communes of less than 2000 inhabitants are managed by a mayor assisted by two associated, at its sides, a municipal council made up of ten members elected by the vote for all. At the time of the debates relating to the financial management of the commune the municipal council is supplemented by the ten more important taxpayers of the village, with being able of deliberation. The mayor, an elected adviser is appointed and named by the Bezirksleiter the equivalent of the current sub-prefect, for one duration identical to that of the municipal council, that is to say six years. Exceptionally, the mayor can be a person out of the council. The meetings of the municipal council are not public, except special decision of the advisers. It is the opposite today.

Church St-Jean-Baptist

    • Wall Gouttereau of the 15th century, on the north-eastern side of the parish church is painted a long funerary band, symbol of mourning, decorated armorial bearings. It visually marks the end of a line of the family of Hattstatt-Schauenbourg.
    • Tomb stone of 1351 out of yellow sandstone (202 X 89 X 11cm), this monument, partially mutilated, represents a laid down woman, the head resting on a cushion. It is vêtue of a long dress and its head is covered with a veil. In the hands united on the chest, it holds a large chain. On the circumference of the monument is held a faded epitaph which indicates that the late one was the wife of Jean de Hattstatt, and that she died in 1351. It could be a question of Johanna Rumler-Schaler, married in 1345 with Jean I {{er}}, lord of Schrankenfels. (I.M.H. 1997)
    • Custode of 1500, out of pink sandstone, this custode, or eucharistic cupboard, is surmounted by a pinnacle and is drawn up along the northern wall. It constitutes a gift of Jacques de Hattstatt and Marguerite of Rathsamhausen. Saint Christophe carrying the Child supports the unit. The cupboard is decorated vegetable reasons which evoke a tree of life. The central part is surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists, by angels carrying of the candles and the censers. A Christ of pain as well as the éplorée Virgin are also represented.
    • Tomb stone of Jacques of Hattstatt and Marguerite of Rathsamhausen of 1518, out of yellow sandstone (216 X 119 X 20 cm), in the beginning, this monument was in the funerary vault of Hattstatt. It represents Jacques, dead on July 25th, 1514, in armor, and his Marguerite wife, deceased on April 23rd, 1518. The two late ones are lying side by side, the head resting on a cushion, the feet posed on two opposite lions. The hands are united in the epic of the prayer. After the Revolution, the monument left the church and affixed against the wall southern gouttereau. It is then placed again inside the building to preserve it bad weather.
    • This parish church is drawn up outside the old strengthened city of Soultzbach. The chorus date completion of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century. In 1738, the nave is rebuilt and increased, the whole of the church is renovated in 1832. The following year, Joseph Callinet (1795-1857), originating in Rouffach, manufactures the organ. In 1898, the building is supplemented by the bell-tower. The unit is surrounded by the cemetery. (I.M.H.1934).

Vault Holy-Catherine

  • Dated from and restored at the 18th century.

Old castle of the HATTSTATT-SCHAUENBOURG of

    • the castle is built for the lords of Hattstatt, about 1275, and remains their property until the end of the 16th century. In 1603, it passes to Schauenbourg, which transforms it into hotel as from 1615 to accommodate there the many curists attracted by famous water of the place. In 1818, it is bought by the abbot Jean-Jacques Bobérieth before being acquired by the congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence of Ribeauvillé, in 1903. It becomes then the old people's home Holy-Anne. This part of the castle, which corresponds to the central home, goes back to the 15th century.
    • the tower of, this tower is built at the time when Hattstatt make surround the city of the ramparts in order to defend it of the possible aggressions of the lords of the surroundings. The site of the ditch from now on is occupied by a garden, maintained by the sisters the house Holy-Anne until 2007 then put on sale.
