Souletin
The souletin is a dialect particular Basque spoken in the Soule (smaller of the 7 historical provinces of the Basque Country, located at the North-East of this one). It has some specificities Linguistique S and Phonétique S which makes conspicuous it. Its pronunciation is different from the other speeches euscariens with, inter alia, the “E” deciding “I” and “O” deciding “or” when they are followed of a vowel and especially with the tonic accent “U” which generally decides as “U” French but can decide “I” according to whether it is followed or preceded by a Voyelle. It characterizes the phonetics souletine where its frequency is much more important than that of “U” Basque standard (which decides “or”) whereas one does not find it in any other dialecte.
The souletin also has lexical specificities and of variation.
Today, more 60 % of the 16 000 Souletins are bascophones, but the reduction in many speakers at the young people and the lack of employment can in the long term involve a risk for the perpetuation of the dialect. Nevertheless, the work undertaken by the religious organizations in which many young people are invested makes it possible the dialect to be maintained, in spite of the standardization of the language with the Basque unified, which does not seem évincer the souletin.
