Souchez

Souchez (to pronounce) is a common French, located in the department of the Pas-de-Calais and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais. It belongs to the Communauté of agglomeration of Lens - Liévin (Communaupole) which gathers 36 common S, is 250.000 inhabitants.

Geography

The Souchez is a brook constituting the course upstream of the Deûle and crossing the borough.

History

One finds in Souchez the military cemeteries of the the Commonwealth Zouave Valley Cemetery and Red Cabaret , as well as the European Center of the Peace which presents in particular a collection of objects of the First World War.

Places and monuments

One can see in Souchez various monuments:

  • the base of the sandstone cross , dating from the the Middle Ages and which was partially destroyed at the time of the First World War. This base is currently near the place, in front of Crédit Agricole and the Post office. It is it should be noted that a reconstitution of the cross such as it was presented at the origin was built recently on the level of the entry of the wood of Carieul which is also on the place.

  • There is, in the vicinity immediate of Souchez, the military cemetery of Lorette on the hill of the same name overhanging Souchez (but which concerns the close village: Ablain-Saint-Nazaire). This very vast and very known cemetery contains thousands of tombs dating from the First World War soldiers French but also German, English… In the center of the cemetery rises a headlight functioning each night and which was recently renovated.
