Souad Massi

Souad Massi is a singer Algérie born the August 23rd 1972 with Algiers, parents Kabyles, in the district of Bab El-Oued.

Biography

Exit of a modest family of music lovers, it discovers the Chaâbi, then the American rock'n'roll, the Folk, the pop, the Country and the Fado Portuguese… She learns the Guitare and the Solfège. She appreciates the Flamenco and occurs on scene within the group Trianas of Algiers starting from 1989.

The black events of the Nineties and in particular the curfew returning the career of almost impossible artist, Souad follows studies of town planning and becomes ingénieure. From 1989, it occurs on scene in Algiers within the group Atakor hard rock. It records a cassette which meets a great success. Souad then gives up town planning to be devoted to the song. Its first cassette carries its first name, it makes known it of a public music lover Anglo-Saxon.

The January 10th 1999 (during the Ramadan), Souad is invited to the festival Femmes of Algiers to the Uncontrollable cabinet with Paris. Noticed, it remains in France and signs a contract with Island-Mercury (Universal Music). Raoui (the Storyteller) leaves in 2001 is applauded by the critic. Souad and its musicians start long series in concerts in all France. Its first titles pass on the waves of France Inter, it is essential as artist and one often regards it as a spokesperson of Algerian youth. Universal gives the opportunity to him to record a second album deb. in 2003. Meanwhile, the artist sings in duet with Marc Lavoine, Ismael Lo or Florent Pagny and turns to France and abroad. In 2005 Souad at the world its first baby puts and passes a few weeks to Tahiti before carrying out its third album.

Souad Massi mixes with the styles as varied as the folk-rock'n'roll, the chaâbi, the arabo-Andalusian music with very personal, often impressed texts poetry and of nostalgia. She sings most of the time in Arab Algerian, sometimes in French, and sometimes in Berbère (Kabyle).
