Sothis is the Greek name of the Egyptian goddess , Sopdet (or Sôpdit).
divine Personification of the star Sirius (the star of the Dog as an Egyptian), it symbolizes the arrival of the annual rising of the the Nile which coincides with the appearance of star at the beginning of July ( the heliacal Lever ). This annual rising being essential to fertilize the arid grounds of banks of the Nile (by the contribution out of water and silt), Sothis was naturally associated with the fertility and prosperity.
One finds it represented under the features of a woman carrying the large white crown (of High-Egypt) surmounted of a star.
