Sorrow and pity
Sorrow and pity is a Documentaire French of Marcel Ophüls left in 1971.
On the basis of the study of the case of Clermont-Ferrand, the film draws up the chronicle of the life of a provincial town between 1940 and 1944.
From one duration of approximately 4 hours, this film, primarily made up of interviews, is the first diving carried out in the French collective memory over the period of the German occupation during the Second world war. An ideology which made practically state until there only facts of resistance, Ophüls made it possible to even stress daily behaviors much more ambiguous with regard to the occupant, of frank collaboration.
In France, this film was censured during more than 10 years on television. Indeed, it gives a very negative vision of France, more turned towards Pétain than towards De Gaulle. The right French, anxious to stress resistant France incarnated by the de Gaulle general often tried to minimize collaboration to preserve national cohesion and also to legitimate the myth of the general. This is why the film will be banished small screen until the arrival of the left in 1981.
