Sorraia

The Sorraia is a primitive horse of the existing Portugal still nowadays.

History of the race

This horse was noticed by an agronomist and famous stockbreeder of horses Lusitanians, Ruy d' Andrade in 1920. Representations resembling to him exist on rupestral engravings of the prehistoric caves.

Formerly used for the horsemanship and work of farm, Sorraia lives today into small wild herds. He was discovered in the " Vale C Sorraïa" , a Portuguese area located between the rivers Sor and Raïa, affluent of Sorraïa which is thrown in the estuary of the Tage.

Characteristics

The dress of Sorraia, often Isabelle with a line of mule and stripes on the members, is it also characteristic of the primitive races. Its conformation is not the best. The animal is however very robust, he survives with very little fodder and resists extreme temperatures. The shoulders are right, the weak back-hand and the rather long members with a poor framework, but the feet are hard and healthy.

  • Height: between 1,22 and 1,33 m;

  • Dress: Generally Isabelle, with a line of mule and stripes on the members, and even sometimes on the body - one sees also gray;
  • Conformation:
    • antiquated famous person, busqué profile;
    • right shoulders;
    • poor back-hand and tail attached low;
    • long members hails.
