Geography
The Commune of Sornay is located in the vicinity immediate of Louhans, full heart of the Bresse, and covers a surface of 1.812 Hectares.
It is cut by two main roads of communication: - the R.D. 971 which connects the R.N. 6 (Chalon-sur-Saône/Mason) in Louhans. - the R.D. 167 of Branges with Romenay. Sprinkled by two rivers: - The PAIL, classified 2nd Category - Public domain. - The DIED SANE, classified 2nd Category - Private Field. Both result from the Jura. They undergo the water falls of the Jurassic plates, with very serious consequences often for the farms of the Valley of Pail downstream from Louhans. The Commune of SORNAY, whose first hard copies go back to the 12th Century was certainly located on a Roman way of low importance and a church was already mentioned there (the current one recent, since is rebuilt in 1980). The Lord of the places was the Lord of Holy-Cross. The opinions of the specialists diverge on toponymy: . the ones see there a Celtic origin with the document of 1155: ecclesia of Saonay (topographic dictionary of S. and L. of Rigault) which points out the etymology of the Saone (stagnant waters, marshes). others, a Latin origin with the document of 1183: ecclesia of Saornaco which would let guess a property of Gallo-Roman Saorniacus… The name of SORNAY appears in 1225. In 1490,62 fires are listed (approximately 340 people). The history of the Commune will be that of the agricultural Community, without big event, very dependant on Louhans. This is why no site or Historic building or Archaeological is listed in the Commune.
