Geography

The Sormonne is also the name of the river which crosses the territory of the commune and which is thrown in the Meuse on the territory of the commune of Warcq.

History

Sormonne is a village built on an arm of the river which gave him its name. One supposes that this name, Sormonne, would be derived from Sermonizes, " Sulmone" (in Latin), meaning salmon. The origin of the village is old: the name of Sormonne is already quoted with the XII° century. The ground of Sormonne belonged then to the field of the lords of Montcornet who had also the castle. This one was built on left bank of the river. It was difficult access thanks to its ditches filled with water. The castle was destroyed about 1789 at the time of the revolution. There remains no ruin of the castle and on its site.
