Sorel-Tracy is a city in the regional Municipalité of county of the Bas-Richelieu to the Quebec, located in the administrative area of the Montérégie.

Geography

Sorel-Tracy is located on southern bank of the the St. Lawrence at the mouth of the Richelieu. The city is built on two banks of the latter with the Sorel sector on bank Is and Tracy sector on Western bank. The city is an important traditionally known industrial center for its iron and steel activity (QIT Fer and Titane, Forging mills of Sorel) and its shipyards (Navy Industries) which with closed its doors towards the end of 1986. During the Second world war, Sorel-Tracy with built several pieces of artillery for the Allies.

History

1641 : The Jesuit Paul the Young person, first writer of the Relations of the Jesuits (1633-1641), is delegated in France to obtain help against the Iroquois danger. According to Leon Pouliot (biographical Dictionary of Canada), the immediate consequence of this voyage was the erection of the Fort Richelieu.

1642 : In August, a flotilla (40 men) arrives at the mouth of the river of Iroquois (Richelieu). Under the direction of Mr. of Montmagny, they undertake the construction of a fort intended to close the great way by which the Iroquois penetrate in the colony. (+ in the Relation of the Jesuits of 1642). August 20th, in the festival of Saint Bernard, the Father Anne of Valley blesses the fort and celebrates the mass there. The tradition wants that this date is regarded as that of the birth of Sorel, although in fact it is necessary to wait 1665 to see the establishment of a European presence on this territory.

1665 : In June, the soldiers of the Régiment of Carignan-Salt boxes (between 800 and 1.000 soldiers) start to arrive at Quebec. Under the high command of Alexandre de Prouville de Tracy, these men have the role of invading Iroquoisie (area of the Lac Champlain) and of cutting to these Amerindian bands the access to the Fleuve the St. Lawrence (On the arrival of Mr. de Tracy in Quebec) and (On the construction of the forts on the Richelieu river in 1665). In July, Mr. de Tracy charges the captain Pierre de Saurel with the construction of the Fort Richelieu with the mouth of the river of Iroquois (Richelieu). Construction is finished on August 13rd.

1667 : At the end of the countryside of the Regiment of Carignan-Salt boxes, 400 soldiers are established in the colony, as colonists and runners of wood.

1668 : Several of the demobilized soldiers of the Régiment of Carignan-Salt boxes become the first colonists to be established Richelieu at the height.

1675 : Opening of the registers of the parish St-Pierre-of-Sorel.

1713 : The Seigniory is seized at the request of Charles Aubert of Chesnaye, principal creditor of Mrs. de Saurel. She is allocated to Claude of Ramezay, on February 14th.

1759 : During the British conquest, the bottom of the parish of Sorel is shaved by the flames on the orders of the English lieutenant-colonel, Lord Andrew Rollo

1764 : March 9th, the Seigniory of Sorel is sold by the young ladies of Ramezay to John Bondfield.

1765 : The Census of the governments of Montreal and the Three-Rivers indicates, for the parish of Sorel, a population of 677 people, that is to say: 167 male men, 144 women, 44 children with the dessusde fifteen years, 157 female children, four male servants, 13 female servants and a foreigner.

1780 : The Seigniory of Sorel is sold by Misters Greenwood and Higginson with the British Crown via the general governor of Canada Frederick Haldimand. A project is then worked out to create on the territory of what today is the Old man Sorel, an English borough or village, inter alia by the massive installation of Loyalistes.

1791 : June 10th, the governor of Canada grants to William-Henry (Sorel) a charter of city and, with his inhabitants, the capacity to elect a member to represent them with the Room of Parliament.

1839 : January 31st, the doctor George Holmes, the lover of Joséphine-Éléonore d' Estimauville, keep silent the husband of the latter, Louis-Pascal-Achilles Taché, owner of part of the seigniory of Kamouraska. At the end of the XIXe century, Georges-Isidore Barthe drew Drames from it from the real life Canadian novel . In 1970, Anne Hébert took as a starting point this business to write the novel Kamouraska (Paris, Seuil), which was carried to the screen in 1973 by the scenario writer Claude Jutra.

1860 : May 19th, 1860 marks the adoption of the Acte to incorporate the town of Sorel . The center of the historical city which bore officially the name of William Henry since his creation in 1791, takes again officially the name of Sorel. , the municipality becomes chief town of the legal district of Richelieu. ‚‚‚Construction of the Law courts. , Sanction of the Act to incorporate the General hospital of the district of Richelieu (May 16th, 1860)

1871 : The Molson' S Bank and the Merchants' Bank are the first to open branches with Sorel.

1889 : March 21st, sanction of the Law constituting of the city of Sorel in corporation.
