Sore-Dioulasso

Sore-Dioulasso is a city of the Burkina Faso, capital of the area of the Top-Basins and province Houet. In many inhabitants, Sore-Dioulasso (“the city of the Sores and Dioulas”) is the second city of the Burkina Faso. Its station is of an astonishing architecture (the train connects Abidjan and Ouagadougou).

Geographical location

Located at the west of Burkina, second city of the country, still called economic capital, Sore-Dioulasso covers a surface of 13.678 ha and counted with the census of 1985,231.162 inhabitants. Growth rate is of 7,23%, which gives for 1995,412.000 inhabitants. The commune of Sore-Dioulasso is managed by a Mayor and an office elected within the municipal council for one five (5) years duration.

History

Administrative and military station since 1897, the current city of Sore-Dioulasso knew a long advance. Indeed, the town of Sore-Dioulasso occurred and developed starting from a small village called “KIBIDOUE” rested by Bobo farmers come from Mandé about 1050.

These farmers Sore, after being itself installed under the “Kibi” which means tree in Sore decided to baptize their village “Kibidoué”. Thereafter, Kibidoué will give “Sya” larger village with the progressive arrival of the Dioula tradesmen come from the kingdom from Kong and other migrants come from the south.

The legend devotes several versions to this name of Sya and one of the versions says that Sya was the name of a young saleswoman of dolo with Kibidoué, famous for its generosity.

In 1904, Commander CAUDRELIER baptizes the Sore-Dioulasso city, which, literally translated of Dioula means the “house of the Sore and Dioula”.

Administrative cutting

At the current stage, it is advisable to retain that under article 7 of law N 004/93/ADP of the bearing May 12th, 1993 municipal organization, Sore-Dioulasso is set up in commune of full exercise, statute from which it profited besides taking into account its importance.

Law N 006/93/ADP of May 12th, 1993 devotes to the commune of Sore-Dioulasso a particular status.

Under article 2 of this law, the commune of Sore-Dioulasso is organized in three (3) districts which are:

  • District of C;
  • District of Dafra;
  • Arrodissement de Konsa.

It is this same law which fixes the limits of the commune of Sore-Dioulasso.

These communes gather twenty five (25) sectors. Each sector comprises an old name but with the new nomination in sector the ex term is used for the designer. Example: Sector 1 ex Dioulassoba.

Economy

With Sore-Dioulasso, it is the administration and the trade which constitute the most important branches of activity.

These two branches of activity occupy two thirds of the credits. The services as a whole concentrate 84% of the credits.

The socio-economic characteristics of Sore-Dioulasso can be analyzed through the urban functions such as transport, the trade, industry, the public services and agriculture.

Trade

Because of its position of international crossroads, the commercial function holds a choice place in the town of Sore-Dioulasso. A great number of national and foreign commercial firms have their seat with Sya.

The repertory of the Chamber of commerce counts 180 establishments of trade going from the general trade to import-export, with the sale of textiles, of construction materials, with the trade of the machines, cars, electricals appliance; Sore-Dioulasso counts approximately 18 markets.

Industry

The essence of the industrial fabric Bobolais is consisted agro-food (BRAKINA, CITEC OIL MILL) by agricultural processing industry (SOFITEX, SOFIB, MABUCIG), light industry (SONACEB boarding, WINNER piles, produced FILSAH cotton), by mechanics and the metallurgy (SIFA, CBTM, PROFIMETAUX, EERI-BF, AUMI) and by chemistry and its derivatives (SAPHYTO, SAP). The industrial park arranged along the railway currently extends towards the Lafiabougou district.

Bobolaise industry is especially intended for the interior market but with the development of the die cotton, it is possible to consider an industry of export.

Since 2005 an industry of fresh mango fruit export in particular was set up. There are a public station of conditioning - the Fruit-bearing Terminal - and a private station.

Transport

The airport of Sore-Dioulasso (ICAO: DFOO) is equipped with a track of 3300 m (after Dakar longest of Western Africa) and can receive any type of planes. There are two flights per week on Abidjan and Ouagadougou.

Sore-Dioulasso is located on the railroad Abidjan-Ouagadougou, exploited by the Sitarail. There are three momentary trains per week on Abidjan and Ouagadougou, and approximately two goods trains per day. A modern platform with containers is in the industrial park.

For road transport, the city is an important crossroads on the axis Mali - Lome.
