History
On a through road between Moors and the Pyrenees, Sorde is traversed as of the time Neolithic and revived with the Moyen-âge by the pilgrims of Saint-Jacques-of-Compostelle. Sorde is indeed an old halt on the way of Turns of the ways of Saint-Jacques-with-Compostelle.The site of Barat-of-Wine (of the Gascon barat of Bi, which means “ditch of life”) not far from the village, is a thousand-year-old crossing point, attesting very old presence of the man, attracted by the fertility of the valleys of the Adour.
It is on this site, with the foot of a cliff, that several layers Préhistorique S provided parts Magdalénien born remarkable. Above exists a Oppidum Protohistorique known as of Larroque. The excavations along the Roman Voie connecting the Spain by the collar of Cize put at the day a Villa decorated Gallo-Roman mosaic S.
In Béarn and Bigorre, the gaves are small torrents which go down from the the Pyrenees. In Antiquity, water feeds the thermal baths then, with the Middle Ages, one uses his driving force for the mills and the traps with Saumon S.
There exists, around Sorde, several crossing points to cross both gaves. The toponymy of certain houses, called still today “Momentary” or “Passage”, makes it possible to recognize these places, just like the localities “the Hospital” or “Espitaou”, point out lodgings of the pilgrims. But the Bateau X are not all the time necessary. Indeed, there exist fords easy to cross except at the time of the snow melt in spring. It is, seems it, Richard Lion-hearted which, at the end of the 12th century, puts a term at the bad habits of the frontier runners of Sorde which strip the pilgrims.
But, if water is a problem for the Jacquet S, it is an economic asset for those which live in the neighborhoods. Its driving force, exploited by the Mill S, is also used to make function the baros, traps with salmons invented by the monks. This invention will remain of use until in 1923. The trap collects the Poisson while turning with the current. However, the salmon, going up the gaves to go to clear close to the source S, is a true richness for the Abbaye, which can fish some up to hundred quintals per annum.
