In Music, the word fifth indicates the interval between five degrees of the diatonic scale. When one speaks about “fifth” without more precision, the word then returns to the perfect fifth, whose exact extent is of three tons and a Demi-ton diatonic.

the adjective “right” should not be confused with the accuracy of intonation which is a relative concept, different it even from the acoustic Pureté which, it, is an absolute concept.

With regard to the solfegic applications of this interval, to consult the article solfegic Fifth. With regard to the harmonic applications of this interval, to consult the articles Agreement (music), Fifth, real note of the agreement and Figuring of the agreements.

In Acoustics musical, the pure fifth is the interval separating two sounds whose Fréquence S fundamental are in the ratio from two to three (either: 1,5): when the note top emits three vibrations, the note of bottom emits two of them. This report/ratio of frequencies appears such as it is in the Gamme pythagorician of which it is one of the bases, like in the natural ranges.

  • Except the octave, this interval is simplest of all, and since always, in the Western music, he was regarded as the interval consonant par excellence - i.e. that whose combination of the sounds is purest, therefore most remarkable at the ear. For this reason, the fifth played a crucial role in the establishment of the musical ranges, the range of Pythagore - Gamme pythagorician - being even exclusively built on this particular interval - cf Cycle of the fifths.

  • However, according to the system of accuracy used, this ratio from two to three can be slightly faded, which involves the hearing of Battement S when the two sounds - fundamental note and its fifth - are emitted simultaneously. Thus, as one generally defines the the in 440 Hz, its pure higher fifth - semi - has a Fréquence of 660 Hz, while the fifth of the equal Tempérament usual, 659,3 Hz. This fifth is of report/ratio 1,498 (instead of 1,500 for the pure fifth), and that of the Tempérament mesotonic with the quarter of coma, of 1,495. To have a concrete idea of these figures, the pure fifth will not emit any Battement: the sound is pure, rectilinear; the fifth of the equal temperament will emit almost a beat a second, and the mesotonic fifth of the temperament approximately two beats a second - in the middle of the keyboard, because the beats double with each octave.

  • the cords of the Violin, the viola and the Violoncelle are granted of fifth in fifth. For the violin, low register with acute, ground, D, semi . On the other hand, the Contrebasse is granted to the Quarte.
