Sophie of Prussia (Potsdam, June 14th 1870 - Frankfurt, January 13rd 1932) was queen of Greece.
Birth and childhood
Sophie was born the
June 14th 1870 with the Nouveau Palate with
Potsdam. His/her father,
Frederic III of Germany, was the son of Guillaume I {{er}} of Germany and
Augusta of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach. His/her mother,
Victoria of the United Kingdom, was the girl of Victoria I {{Re}} of the United Kingdom and of
Albert of Saxony-Cobourg-Gotha. Sophie was the seventh of a family of eight children.
Marriage and children
Sophie married Constantin I {{er}} of Greece the
October 27th 1889 with
Athens. The couple settled with the palate of Tatoi and had six children:
Public life
Sophie became queen of Greece the
March 18th 1913, when her husband Constantin Ier succeeded his father, Georges I {{er}} of Greece. But, the
June 11th 1917, during the
First World War, Constantin Ier is lived constrained to abdicate in favor of its second Alexandre wire, because of his feelings pro-German. One reproached Sophie for being the cause of these feelings pro-German because it was the sister of
Guillaume II of Germany; but actually, it shared the feelings pro-British of its mother. Sophie and her husband had then to leave the
Greece and lived in exile in Suisse.
To died from Alexandre Ier, killed by the bite of a monkey the October 25th 1920, Sophie and Constantin Ier returned to Greece and went up on the throne for the second time. But, the September 27th 1922, Constantin Ier was obliged to abdicate again, this time in favor of his/her Georges oldest son, after with his defeat against the Turkey during the gréco-Turkish Guerre. Sophie and her husband had again to leave Greece and lived in exile in Sicily, where Constantin Ier died out the January 11th 1923.
Disease and death
In his last years, one diagnosed in Sophie a
Cancer and she died the
January 13rd 1932 with Francfort-sur-le-Main. After the restoration of monarchy in Greece, it was buried in
November 1936 with the palate of Tatoi.
