Sophia Town is a district of Johannesburg in South Africa called Triomf of 1955 with 2006.

The name of Sophiatown refers to Hermann Tobiansky who had bought in 1899 the ground where was to set up a white district of Johannesburg. He baptized the streets in the name of his children and the city in the name of his wife.

The district became populated nevertheless during the years by black inhabitants and became mixed.

In 1955, in full policy of Apartheid, the government made move of force 65.000 black residents of Sophiatown towards new the Township of Soweto (South Western Township).

Sophiatown became again renamed white suburbs " Triomf" (Triumph in Afrikaans).

In February 2006, Amos Masondo, the mayor of the municipality of Johannesburg gave again officially its name of Sophiatown to the district in the presence of many former black residents expelled in 1955.
