Sonic Youth is a group of independent Rock founded with New York in 1981. Clearly related on ethics and the culture Punk S, Sonic Youth was associated with various musical currents since the beginning of the Années 1980  : initially No wave (1981-1983), then Hardware-core (1983-1986), Grunge (1989-1992), Post-rock'n'roll (1998-2001).

This difficult classification is due partly to a style clean, nourished very many influences and creating its own character. The music of Sonic Youth can be regarded as an attempt at destructuration of the Pop music by the recurring use of Dissonance S and Distorsion S in songs based on melody S pop

At the beginning inspired by the experiments of Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca (with which the major part of the group played), they were known for the use of a not very orthodoxe variety of tunings of guitar, and for the use of the prepared guitars and the screwdrivers added to modify the stamp.

The members of Sonic Youth each one are in addition implied in various additional artistic projects (music, films,…) and many independent groups sponsored (for example Blonde Redhead, but most famous being Nirvana, at the beginning of the Années 1990).

They created their clean Independent label Sonic Youth Recordings, or SYR, in order to leave the experimental discs which could not appear on Geffen, their usual label.
