Sonchamp

Sonchamp is a common department of the Yvelines, in the area Île-de-France, in France, located at 9 km to the south of Rambouillet.

The name of “Sonchamp” would derive from a name of origin Germanic, Sunno and suffix “field”.

The inhabitants are called Sonchampois.

Geography

This primarily rural commune is one of vastest of Yvelines. It is bordering on Orcemont and Prunay-in-Yvelines in the west, of Ablis in the south, Clairefontaine-in-Yvelines, Saint-Arnoult-in-Yvelines and Ponthévrard in the east and of Rambouillet in north.

The communal territory, before very devoted to the cereal field crop, is wooded in its northern part which belongs to the national forest of Rambouillet. The commune is in fact with the transition between the natural area from Yveline and Beauce neighbor.

The habitat is distributed between the central borough of Sonchamp and various hamlets of which Greffiers, Hunière, Guépière, Chatonville, Loireux, Mounts and Meurgers in extreme cases of Saint-Arnoult.

The commune is served by the Trunk road 10 which passes to the western edge of the territory, the borough being connected to the close cities by the local roadway system, in particular D 936 which connects Rambouillet to Saint-Arnoult-in-Yvelines. The highway A10 crosses the southern point of the commune.

It is sprinkled, in South-east, by the Rémarde, affluent of the Orge. The Drouette skirts the North-West of the commune marking the limit with that of Rambouillet.

History

  • Site inhabited as of the Neolithic time.
  • 1865 : construction of the castle of Pinceloup.
  • 1888 : opening of the “school Ours”, professional training center managed by the town hall of Paris, installed in the castle of Pinceloup.
  • 1972 : opening of the animalist space of Yvelines (become Rambouillet space in 1994).

  • Castle of Pinceloup: building of the XIXe century, built by Eugene Thome, collaborator of the Baron Haussmann.

The commune, located at the south-western limit of the Regional natural park of the high valley of Chevreuse, belonged to the Park from its creation in 1985 in 1999.
