Sonceboz-Sombeval

Geography

Sonceboz-Sombeval is a commune Suisse located in the Canton of Bern. It belongs to the area of the the Bernese Jura, the French-speaking part of the Canton of Bern. It is in the Small valley of Saint-Imier, which belongs to the district of Courtelary.

History

The commune is the fruit of the regrouping of two villages which formerly were separated by a floodplain, the village of Sonceboz and that of Sombeval .

The first authentic mention of Sombeval goes back to 866, in a document by which Lothaire II, king de Lorraine, confirm with the abbey of Moutier-Grandval its possessions located in various places. Sombeval is named there Summavallis. In 1303, the name of Sonceboz (Suntzelbo) made its appearance in a document. In 1315, a recognition, which mentions mill with Sonceboz, known as that the church of Sombeval is dedicated to holy Agathe. At the time of transport by diligences, Sonceboz-Sombeval was an important relay on the Bern-Basle section.

From 1797 to 1815, Sonceboz-Sombeval belonged to the France, within the department of Mount-Terrible, then, as from 1800, of the department of the Haut-Rhin, to which the department of Mount-Terrible was attached. By decision of the Congress of Vienna, the territory of old the évêché of Basle was allotted to the Canton of Bern, in 1815.

Culture

The village is located on old a Roman Voie, of which there remain some vestiges, near the collar of the Pierre-Sluice. This collar connects the Small valley of Saint-Imier and the Vallée of Tavannes.
