Sommières

Sommières is a common French, located in the department of the Gard and the area Languedoc-Roussillon.

Its inhabitants is called Sommiérois.

Geography

Located at the periphery of the Vaunage, very wine area, with twenty-two kilometers of Nimes and to twenty-eight of Montpellier, this small village is known for its medieval center like its castle, today in ruin but from which the tower remains accessible to the visitors.

History

The Pont with the top of the Vidourle was built at the 1st century by the Empereur Tibère in order to connect Nimes to Toulouse.
It initially consisted of seventeen arches for an overall length of one hundred quatre-vingt-neuf meters. These dimensions were sufficient to span the bed of the Vidourle and to ensure the connection between two banks, in spite of many the Crue S of the capricious river.
Sommières was set up at the 10th century partly on the bridge (of which there remain only some arches), with very the bed of the Fleuve, which explains many the Inondation S whose the city at the time of the overflows of Vidourle is victim.

During the wars of religion, the city changes hands on several occasions. After the Massacre of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, they are initially the Protestants who leave the city for Anduze and Sauve. They join together a troop, and under the direction of Antoine Dupleix, known as the Grémian captain, they take the city by surprised on November 6th, 1572.

The governor of Languedoc, Montmorency-Damville decides in January 1573 to take again the city, which is invested on February 11th. After two months of seat, the count de Damville accepts the rendering of the huguenots. He saves the inhabitants and the defenders, of Cevennes carrying to the hat the spoon of the Gueux of Zealand, on instruction of the king but the Protestants must leave the city.

In 1622, the city is besieged, like almost all the Protestant cities, by the royal army.

In 1703, at the time of the War of Camisards, Jean Cavalier makes an incursion into Sommières on October 2nd, 1703. It sets fire to part of the suburb of Bourguet, and 7 to eight people are killed.
