The councils Solvay (also called congress Solvay and conferences Solvay ) are scientific conferences in physics and chemistry which were held since 1911. At the beginning of the 20th century, these councils, bringing together the largest scientists of the time, allowed important advances in quantum Mécanique. They were organized thanks to the patronage of Ernest Solvay, a Chimiste and Belgian Industriel .
The Solvay councils are organized since the second world war according to a three years cycle: council of physics the first year, no conference the second and council of chemistry the third. This cycle however was sometimes disturbed.
These congresses transfer the largest physicists of the beginning of the 20th century to discuss on the all recent quantum Mécanique. The congress which was held in 1927 with Brussels remained celebrates in this respect. As, it is with these conferences as Einstein and Lorentz could meet. For a long time, Marie Curie was the only woman having taken part in a Solvay council.
Nowadays, the Solvay councils are organized by the International institutes Solvay. The 23e Solvay council of physics took place from December 1st to December 3rd, 2005 with the Hôtel Metropolis of Brussels (just like the first).
The first council of Chimie took seat in 1922. In all, 20 councils of Chemistry were organized, in Brussels for the majority.
