the church
the leaning bell-tower
Come to visit the church of Solre the Castle, a construction of XVIème century so easily locatable to its leaning bell-tower. May 10th, 1611, a fire consumed the old arrow and part of the church. In the repairing of the building, one substituted for the old bell-tower (Gothic undoubtedly) the beautiful arrow bulbiforme which leans today mélancoliquement the head towards the place.
The leaning one of the latter is explained doubly: - by the strong bad weather which rotted wood and destabilized the frame; - by a manufacturing defect on the level of the carryforward of the pieces of wood on the peripheral walls and the corbels anchored in masonry on a level much low… Miracle! The slope of the bell-tower does not call into question its balance!
The bell-tower has also an extremely malicious legend. Often, when it was able to the girls of Solre to marry, of the kids awaited them the door by calling their mother. However, one day, a true virgin presented herself to the church for convoler in right weddings. It is affirmed that the bell-tower was so surprised that it leant ahead to see the bride who passed under the porch. In punishment of its curiosity, the Sky would have inflicted a stiff neck with perpetuity to him!
the castle of Solre-the-castle:
Do not seek a castle with Solre the Castle! There does not remain about it from now on more any trace. The fortress was taken and burned first once in 1473 by the constable of Saint-pol., with the service of king de France, Louis XI. In 1560, it finds all its splendor and passes to the hands of one the most famous families of Solre, Croÿ. They remain lords, then princes of the city after Solre was set up in principality by Charles II, king d' Espagne… Until 1793… To most extremely from the Revolution, the castle falls under the pickaxe from the demolition contracters. Solre-the-castle owes its name, on the one hand with the brook of Solre which crosses it, on the other hand, with this strong castle which was built with the current site of the place.
