Solomon de Caus

Solomon de Caus is a Engineer French (Pays of Caux in Normandy, 1576 - Paris, 1626). Its work covers fields as various as architecture, mechanics, hydraulics, the prospect and the music.

In 1612, it emigrated like Protesting and entered to the service of Jacques Ier of England as engineer in England. It there designed the gardens of Greenwich and Somerset House and published in London " the Prospect with the reason for the shades and mirrors " (1612).

Of 1614 with 1620, it officiated at the court of the voter palatine Frederic V. In its work the Reasons of the moving forces, with various machines as well useful as pleasant (Frankfurt, 1605, and Paris, 1624), it developed a Théorie relating to the expansion and the Condensation of the vapor, which makes it regard as the Pionnier of the practical use of the Driving force of this one.

In 1615 it published at Jon Norton in Hamburg a theoretical treaty in two books entitled " Harmoniques" institutions;. This treaty joins together a very clear digest of the musical theories of the rebirth, in particular exposing the calculation of the various intervals, the nature and the characteristics of the various musical modes, and some precepts of counterpoint.

In 1619, it carried out with Heidelberg the garden of Palatinat, true " eighth wonder of the world " from its time, of which it described the design in " Hortus Palatinus " (1620). It returned to France, where it obtained the title of architect and Engineer of the king (Louis XIII) in 1621.

Skilful especially in hydraulics, it made several remarkable inventions and suspected the power of the vapor. The Marquis de Worcester, to whom them English allots this discovery, did nothing but borrow it to him.
