Solliès-Pont

Solliès-Pont is a common French, located in the department of the Var of the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure, located at 12 km in the north of Toulon. Its inhabitants is called the " Solliès-Pontois" .

It is chief town of canton and gathers the villages of Belgentier, Farlède, Solliès-Toucas and Solliès-City of which it is also the administrative center and commercial.
Solliès-Pont is also the capital of the Figue.

Geography

Solliès-Pont is located at the west of the valley of Gapeau, the foot of the Forest of Make-White, and at the east of the Massif of the Holy-Balsam. The town of Toulon in south-west is distant from 12 km, and the town of Hyères in south-east is distant from approximately 20 km.

The city is crossed by the river Gapeau which allows the irrigation of the cultivable grounds being all around the commune.

History

The canton of Solliès-Pont originates in the locality of Solliès-City (formerly Solliès-Le-Haut). Built at the time gallo-romaine.

The small town was born from the parcelling out from what was the territory of Solliès-Cities and Solliès-Le-Haut, locality dependant on the seigniory of the family Forbin located on the rocky outcrop dominating the valley of Gapeau.
Thanks to this site, during time when the enemy troops were presented with quarrelsome intentions, the inhabitants took refuge on the top thus succeeding in driving out the dangerous adversaires.
Towards the end of the Middle Ages one built the first dwellings close to the bridge on Gapeau. In 1480 certain Forbin bought the territory which became Solliès-Pont, name adapted as of the French revolution, whose direction derives from " Soleil" in language Of Provence E. In 1797 the Commune obtained independence so much désirée.
April 8th, 1799, the territory of Solliès and thirty hamlets which do not form that only one community is shared in four communes: Solliès-city, Solliès-Pont, Solliès-Toucas and Farlède (formerly Solliès-Farlède).

The seigniory of Solliès successively belongs to the Viscounts of Marseilles, with the counts de Provence, the family Forbin and various particuliers.
The count Geoffroy gives Solliès to the Viscount of Marseilles, Solliès belongs then to the Piégut family and the Riquier family, of Morance, Beauveau, Forbin (known as " Grand"), Of the Piglets, still in Forbin, then with the Barben family, of Beautiful, of Blois, of Dreux, Tarente, Gonsalve de Morance and with its successors who, until under Louis XIV were governors of Toulon.

The castle of Solliès-Pont accepted the visit of Charles IX, Catherine de Médicis, Louis XIV. Under the French revolution, soldiers confined in the castle reflect fire there; it was rebuilt in 1862.

Towards the end of and at the beginning of the 17th century, Solliès-Pont was unceasingly exposed to the plague of the Peste.
The city was many time plundered and ransacked during the wars of religion, and the troops of the duke of Savoy in 1707.

At the 19th century, one cultivated there lemons, oranges and apples; there were important tanneries and spinning mills of soie.
Today, Solliès-Pont is specialized in the production of Chocolat, of Nougat, jams… like in the realization of invaluable Céramique S and enamels. The city also presents a cellar Vinicole.

Economy

Vineyards, olive groves, fields of vegetables and fruit plantations constitute the greatest part of the economy of the city. Solliès-Pont was formerly famous for its cherries today, it is the culture of the fig which with taken the step on that of cherry. Solliès-Pont indicates itself like capital of fig and recently has a AOC which labellise its production.

The wines of quality carry the quality control mark AOC Côtes of Provence. Co-operatives exist for the marketing of the wine, the fruits and vegetables.
