Solingen is a city in Rhineland-of-North-Westphalia. It is located on the northern edge of the named area Berg, in the south of the the Ruhr. It counts 163.600 inhabitants in 2001.

Solingen is called the “city of the blades” because it is its speciality since the Moyen-âge and still nowadays 90% of the Couteau X German are forged there with the Acier with the Vanadium.

Solingen was mentioned for the first time in 965. It was a small village during centuries, strengthened at the 15th century. During the Second world war, the city was completely destroyed. The remarkable buildings are:

  • Château of the counts de Berg, 12th century
  • Klosterkirche , church (1690)
  • the German museum of the blades, presenting swords and cutting blades of all the times,
  • Müngstener Brücke , a bridge of Railroad connecting to the city close to Remscheid, 107 m above the ground, which makes some highest of this type in Germany.

Solingen is the town of birth of Adolf Eichmann.

In May 1993, two women and three girls of an immigrant family Turkish were the victims with seven other people of a xenophobe attack.
